My Family Saved Their Adopted Daughter First, Then I Died Before Their Eyes Chapter 03

The trauma room doors burst open as the surgical lights overhead snapped on.

Noah pressed both hands over my wound, but blood kept pouring through his fingers.

“Why won’t it stop?”

Cold sweat covered his forehead.

“Hemostats, trauma dressing, and two more packs of gauze. Now!”

Emma stared at the monitor and shouted, “Blood pressure fifty, heart rate forty, and both are still dropping!”

“Rush the blood work. Activate the massive transfusion protocol. Tell the blood bank we need AB-negative blood and platelets!”

The gauze was soaked through almost as soon as it touched me.

As Emma cut open my pant leg, a bloodstained sheet of paper slipped from my pocket and fell to the floor.

She unfolded it.

The moment she read the diagnosis, her voice turned unsteady.

“Dr. Carter, this report was issued by our hematology department two weeks ago. Severe clotting disorder.”

Noah stared at the diagnosis on the page.

“That’s why standard bleeding control isn’t working. Send every available unit of AB-negative blood and every platelet unit you have!”

Five minutes later, Emma came running back empty-handed.

“The blood bank doesn’t have any available AB-negative blood.”

“That’s impossible. I checked the inventory yesterday.”

“The last four units were reserved by Dr. Bennett for Lily’s private observation room. They’re marked as a precautionary reserve.”

Noah packed fresh dressing into my wound and told Emma to keep pressure on it before rushing out of the trauma room.

An argument broke out in the hallway almost immediately.

“Dr. Bennett, release those four units. Claire is hemorrhaging. She has a severe clotting disorder. If we don’t transfuse her now, we’re going to lose her!”

Ethan clearly didn’t believe him.

“She sent you out here to play along with this?”

“I just saw her. She doesn’t have the serious injury you’re describing. She just has red paint on her clothes.”

“It’s a penetrating abdominal wound, and she has a diagnostic report from this hospital on her!”

“A printed sheet of paper doesn’t prove anything.” Ethan cut him off. “Lily was involved in a major accident. She may not have visible injuries right now, but delayed complications are still possible. Those four units need to stay on standby.”

Noah finally lost his temper.

“Lily is sitting in her room playing on her phone. Claire’s blood pressure has dropped to forty. She’s your sister!”

“Watch your tone. I’m the ER medical director.”

Then Dad’s voice rang out.

“This is a hospital. Stop shouting in the hallway. I’m Claire’s father, and I can confirm she’s been claiming a few scrapes are life-threatening ever since the accident. Lily has no other parents to turn to. We have to make sure she’s safe. Ethan is right not to divert reserved blood just because of a family connection.”

Noah tried to argue again, but two security officers stepped in and blocked him.

Lying beneath the lights, I finally understood.

Procedure and fairness were just words they used whenever they decided to abandon me.
