I looked back at her in confusion.

“Is there something on my face?”

Vanessa suddenly raised her hand and slapped me as hard as she could.

She put her full strength into it and deliberately dragged her nails across my skin. Within seconds,

red scratches stood out over the mark her hand had left.

Vanessa smiled in satisfaction.

“There is now. You’re lucky all you got was a slap, you little homewrecker.”

I held my burning cheek.

It hurt. I wanted to cry, but crying wouldn’t help, and doing it in front of everyone felt humiliating.

I sniffed, turned my back on Vanessa, and silently began packing my things.

Just then, my phone chimed with a message from Adrian.

[Baby, I miss you so much. Do you miss me?]

[I’ll be flying home in two days. Wait for me, okay?]

I read the messages, then thought of Vanessa standing behind me.

Adrian must have sent them to the wrong person. Those must have been meant for her.

I pressed my lips together and put my phone away without replying.

Vanessa was gone by the time I left the office.

Fortunately, she hadn’t taken my e-bike. That immediately improved my mood.

I settled onto the seat, feeling much better, and was about to switch it on when my phone buzzed

again.

[Chloe, baby, why are you ignoring me?]

[Talk to me. Talk to me. Talk to me. Talk to me…]

I stared at the stream of messages. He’d used my name, so he hadn’t texted the wrong person after

all.

I didn’t know what he was playing at. After everything that had happened, I couldn’t help feeling hurt. I typed back:

[You’ve already got a wife. What do you want with me?]

The typing indicator appeared. Three seconds later, his reply came through.

[What wife? You’re the only woman I want to marry!]
