Jessica stood in the doorway, tablet in hand, noting down every item the movers carried out.

“Go through everything. Don’t leave a thing behind, or she’ll sell the whole flat off bit by bit and Mr Harrison won’t have a clue.”

I stood off to one side, powerless to stop them.

After the movers left, I stared at the empty rooms and gave a bitter laugh.

When Blake moved me into the apartment a year ago, he had personally chosen every piece of furniture.

Back then, he had just helped me get away from my gambling-addicted father, who was constantly demanding money from me.

Blake had held my hand and said, “You’ll never have to worry about making ends meet again.”

He had sounded so sincere that I believed him.

Now, I wasn’t even sure I had made the right choice.

A notification from a job-search app popped up on my phone.

A nearby bar was hiring evening servers for sixty dollars a shift, plus tips.

If I worked there quietly for a month, I could save enough to cover the clinic fees.

At the interview, the manager saw that I was serious about the job and hired me on the spot, telling me to start in three days.

After leaving the bar, I was about to message Kelly when my stomach suddenly churned.

My vision went black, and I collapsed on the pavement.

When I woke up, I was in an emergency observation room.

A nurse adjusted my drip and said, “You’ve been undernourished for quite a while. We’re giving you fluids to help your body recover.”

She glanced at my chart and frowned.

“It’s not often we see a pregnant woman faint because she hasn’t eaten. Is there a partner or anyone in your family we can call?”

I gripped the bedsheet and answered calmly, “No.”

Concern deepened in her eyes.

“Whatever you decide, you need to look after yourself first.”

I nodded.

I had thought that once I was pregnant, I might at least be able to eat one proper meal.

But when I left the hospital, I called Blake three times in a row, and he declined every call.

I had no choice but to borrow money from Kelly to cover what my insurance didn’t.

She didn’t ask a single question. She simply paid the bill for me.

“You ended up in the ER and Blake still hasn’t shown his face? Right, I’m going to find him.”

I quickly stopped her.

“Let me handle it. I’ve made up my mind about the baby. I’ll tell him myself tonight.”

To my surprise, Blake was in the kitchen when I got back to the apartment.

He was wearing an apron and putting roasted meat and vegetables on the table.

When he saw me, he only asked, “Why is there nothing to eat in the flat? Is this really how you’ve been living?”

The smell of hot oil hit me.

Before I could answer, I rushed into the bathroom and started dry-heaving.

Blake followed me in, frowning.

“What’s wrong with you? Why are you so pale?”

He handed me a glass of water.

“Since when have you been this weak?”

I rinsed my mouth and waited for the nausea to ease before speaking.

“Give me some money to live on.”

The room went quiet for a few seconds.

Then Blake gave a cold laugh.

“So this is what all that was about? Money? Were those three calls earlier about this too?”

I braced myself against the wall and straightened up.

“Yes.”

His gaze turned cold at once.

“You’ll really try anything to get money out of me, won’t you?”

He grabbed his coat and headed for the door.

Before leaving, he paused.

“I’ll get Jessica to transfer some.”

The door slammed shut behind him.

I had no idea how long I stood there before slowly walking over to the dining table.

Blake had made roasted ribs, once my favourite food.

Now, even looking at them made me feel sick.

The next morning, Jessica sent me a message.

“Ms Carter, if you keep asking for more, you’ll only make Mr Harrison even more fed up with you.”
