Pregnant I Took a Bar Job and Heard My Husband Say He Gave Me 400000 Monthly Chapter 02

But after going without proper nutrition for so long, I wasn’t in good shape.

I hesitated for a long time before finally asking the doctor, “How much would it cost if I decided to terminate the pregnancy?”

The doctor looked up at me, her voice softening.

“The decision’s yours. At this stage, including the examination and medication, it would be about a thousand dollars. Would you like to speak to a counsellor first?”

I lowered my head, unsure how to answer.

The examination had already used up the last of the available credit on my card.

I had less than fifty dollars left.

After leaving the clinic, I took the ultrasound report to Harrison Investment Group.

If I was going to keep the baby, I needed to sort out prenatal checkups, proper nutrition, and medical insurance.

I had to speak to Blake face-to-face.

But Jessica stopped me outside his office on the top floor.

“Mr Harrison’s in a board meeting. What do you need?”

I tightened my grip on the report and lowered my voice without meaning to.

“I really am pregnant. If I’m going to keep the baby, I need help with living costs and medical bills.”

Jessica glanced at the document, then tossed it back into my arms.

“Miss Carter, an ultrasound report isn’t exactly hard to fake. What, are you planning to say you lost the baby next month and then ask for more money for medical bills?”

Several employees in the open-plan office overheard us and turned to look.

“Doesn’t Mr Harrison already give her a fortune every month? Using pregnancy as an excuse is going too far.”

My head dipped lower with every comment.

Jessica walked around me and pressed the elevator button.

“Please don’t disturb people while they’re working.”

I put the report back in my bag and left the top floor amid their hushed whispers.

As I passed through the reception area downstairs, I heard Jessica telling the receptionist off over the phone.

“From now on, don’t let people like her come upstairs begging for money.”

I quickened my pace and left the building.

Out on the pavement, I gently rested a hand on my stomach.

“What am I supposed to do?”

My gaze fell on the limited-edition handbag hanging at my side, and an idea came to me.

I hurried to a nearby consignment shop.

The owner could tell I needed cash quickly and would only offer me twelve thousand dollars.

The bag had been Blake’s birthday gift to me that year, and it was hard to find even in boutiques.

But I had no other choice, so I signed the consignment paperwork.

The moment the payment came through, I finally felt a little more secure.

That evening, a photo of me selling the designer bag appeared on social media.

Some people said I had spent so recklessly that I was now forced to sell gifts to cover my expenses.

Others speculated that my marriage to Blake had already fallen apart and that I was secretly selling off our belongings.

It wasn’t long before Blake called me.

He asked quietly, “Are you really so short of money that you had to sell the birthday present I gave you?”

“Jessica also said you came to the office this afternoon with a forged ultrasound report asking for more money.”

I was about to explain, but he carried on before I could speak.

“If you need anything, speak to Jessica. Why make up a lie like this?”

He sounded exhausted, utterly disappointed in me.

I swallowed everything I had been about to say.

“I understand.”

After the call ended, before I had even decided whether to keep the baby, the twelve thousand dollars I had just received was transferred straight back out, along with the money Kelly had lent me.

Jessica sent me a message shortly afterwards.

“Mr Harrison feels you haven’t been managing your spending properly, so I’ll be looking after these funds for you for the time being.”

The next day, a moving company arrived at the apartment and took everything of value: the leather sofa, the smart appliances, the paintings, even the potted plants from the terrace.
