After Gavin and I left the county clerk’s office, we took a cab to the cemetery.

I stood in front of Grandma’s grave, tears pouring down my face. “Grandma, I came to see you. Gavin and I got married. Will you be happy for us?”

I wiped my face, but my voice still trembled. “Grandma, don’t worry. I’ll be happy. I promise I’ll be happy.”

Gavin took my hand and gently patted my back, comforting me. “Don’t cry. Your grandmother’d never want to

see you this sad.”

As we left the cemetery, the wind slipped beneath my collar. I suddenly stopped in my tracks.

“Gavin,” I said softly, staring at the ground. “If I married you because it was Grandma’s final wish… would that bother you?”

Before he could answer, I hurriedly added, “It’s okay. I told you I wouldn’t hold you back. If you meet someone

you truly love someday, we can get divorced.”

Gavin looked at me for a long time. The wind stirred his hair. Finally, he nodded with a faint smile.

“Okay. Whatever you want.”

Only then did I feel relieved. I was just about to get into the car when I heard hurried footsteps behind me.

“Valery!”

I turned and saw Joel standing there, panting. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on Gavin and me, especially our joined hands.

“Valery, did you really… marry him?”

I said nothing. Instead, I tightened my grip on Gavin’s hand. Gavin immediately squeezed back, his palm

warm.

Joel took another step forward, unable to accept it. “Valery, this is fake, isn’t it? You only married him to make me jealous, to force me to marry you. Right?”

I couldn’t help laughing. Turning to Gavin, I deliberately said with a hint of sweetness, “Honey, tell him we’re

married.”

Gavin cooperated, slipping an arm around my shoulders, and gave me a gentle, indulgent smile before

looking at Joel and confirming that I was telling the truth.

Joel stared at me, then at Gavin, his expression growing darker by the second.

“No… You’re lying. Liars!” He murmured the words as though trying to convince himself.

When I walked past him with my arm linking through Gavin’s, he suddenly turned and blocked our path.

“Why? This isn’t fair. I was with Nina because I was trying to save her! But what about you? How could you just turn around, stop loving me, and marry someone else? What am I supposed to do?”

“I did all of this to save someone. I did it for you, too!”

I stopped and couldn’t hold back my laughter. “For me?” I turned around, my gaze growing colder.

“Joel, every time Nina came to you with another so-called mission, you used helping her as an excuse to do whatever you wanted. When you slept with her, did you really believe you were doing it for some mission?”

“You knew better than anyone that the System thing was fake. You just gave in to your desires and enjoyed the thrill of cheating.”

“Stop pretending, Joel. And Nina can stop pretending, too.”

I tightened my hold on Gavin’s arm and looked at Joel one last time. “I gave you both what you wanted.”
