The Day They Left Me Behind, I Canceled the Wedding and Them Chapter 08

She scrambled out of the water, looking disheveled, and looked down at her soaking-wet clothes.

A gloomy, almost terrifying expression slowly spread across her face.

It was a while before she started walking again, slowly making her way toward the road, where she

hailed a taxi and headed to the hospital alone.

Ethan and Derek were the first to flag down a taxi and rush to the hospital.

Because of the chain-reaction car accident, the hospital was extremely busy.

There were relatives crying and wailing, medical staff rushing back and forth, and bloodstains on the floor that hadn’t yet been cleaned up.

And the sound of ambulances wailing.

As soon as Ethan and Derek got out of the car and saw this scene, their faces turned even paler.

The two of them rushed to the registration desk and asked urgently:

“Excuse me, where is Elaine, the victim of the chain-reaction car accident? We’re tourists visiting from out of town, and we’re her only two family members!”

After asking them to wait a moment, the staff member looked down to check something for a moment, then looked up and told them the department and bed number.

Ethan and Derek hurriedly said, “Thank you,” and sprinted toward the emergency department.

They finally found Elaine.

She lay alone in the hospital bed, her eyes tightly closed, her hands and body wrapped in

snow-white gauze, her face as pale as the gauze itself.

There wasn’t a soul around.

The patient in the bed next to hers was crying, and a crowd had gathered around the bed.

They were all trying to comfort her.

“Honey, I bought you that bracelet you wanted. Take a look-do you like it? If you do, should I put it on for you?”

“Stop crying, honey. What do you want to eat or drink? Just tell me, and we’ll go buy it right away I’ll get it for you immediately!”

Honey, does it hurt? Should I go find a doctor to give you some painkillers?”

“If that doesn’t work, we’ll get you a pain pump. You can’t possibly be in this much pain!”

Every word was filled with anxiety and concern.

This stood in stark contrast to Elaine, who had no relatives with her.

Ethan felt a mix of pain and heartache. He took a few steps toward the hospital bed, about to take

Elaine’s hand.

“Elaine, I’m here. I’m sorry I’m late…”

Derek was about to follow.

A nurse pushing a medication cart came over and, upon seeing Ethan, immediately called out:

“Are you Elaine’s relatives? Why did you take so long to get here?”

“Hurry up and go take care of the paperwork and pay the bill!”

“The hospital has been covering all her expenses. What have you family members been doing? We

couldn’t reach you no matter how many times we called.”

Derek’s voice trembled slightly. “I’m sorry. I’ll go right now.”

He didn’t know what to say.

Should he tell the nurse that he was out gathering shellfish with another girl?

That they all thought Elaine was lying, trying to get back at them for tricking her that afternoon?

Holding his ID, he hurried over to a payment machine.

The nurse paid him no further attention and walked over to Elaine’s hospital bed. When she saw

Ethan tentatively reaching out to hold the patient’s hand, she frowned and immediately stopped

him.

“What’s your relationship to her? Don’t touch her for now-she has cuts on her hands and body that have just been cleaned and bandaged.”
