The Blood Oath’s Ten-Year Silence Chapter 04

The red wax seal of the Holy See’s Diocesan Tribunal in Monreale pressed into the parchment with a heavy, hollow thud.

Monsignor D’Angelo lifted the silver signet stamp, blowing gently on the scarlet impression.

“Sign here, Signorina Falcone,” the elderly priest murmured, his tired eyes filled with sorrow behind wire-rimmed spectacles. “With this signature, you officially renounce all claims to the Falcone lineage, its titles, its protection, and its blood inheritance. Under ecclesiastical canon and Sicilian customary law, you will become nullius filius-a child of no one.”

I picked up the fountain pen. My hand did not waver by a single millimeter.

I signed: Elena Falcone.

Then, beneath the ecclesiastical renunciation, I signed the petition of entry for the Order of the Silent Cross, formally requesting that the Grand Master admit me into the cloister of the White Citadel on Mount Pellegrino.

“Signorina,” Monsignor D’Angelo hesitated, his hand resting gently over the parchment. “You are thirty years old. The Blood Oath of the Ten-Year Silence is not an ordinary nun’s novitiate. It was created in the fourteenth century for knights and penitents seeking absolution from mortal sin. For ten years, you will not speak a single word. You will never receive visitors. You will never receive letters. If your family falls to rival guns, you will not be permitted to leave to attend their funerals.”

“I have no family, Monsignor,” I said calmly. “And I have no words left for

this world.”

I gathered my stamped copy of the certificate.

As I walked down the grand marble steps of the cathedral into the Piazza

del Duomo, my satellite phone vibrated inside my leather jacket.

The display flashed with Matteo’s priority cipher.

I tapped the screen and held the phone to my ear. “Matteo.”

“Elena!” Matteo’s furious roar exploded through the receiver, so loud that two passing pigeons fluttered into the rain. “What kind of insane circus are you running now?! The family chancellor just called me on the yacht! You filed an ecclesiastical blood renunciation at Monreale?!”

“I did,” I answered calmly, watching the rain pool in the cobblestone gutters.

“Have you lost your fucking mind?!” Matteo snarled. “Do you think you can embarrass me in front of the Commission? You think by threatening to join some holy madhouse, I’m going to beg you to come back as underboss?”

“I am not threatening anything, Matteo,” I said softly. “The papers are signed. The tribunal has stamped them.”

A venomous, incredulous laugh cut across the line.

“You arrogant bitch,” Matteo sneered. “You think you survived nine years in this business because of your knife? You survived because you carried the name Falcone! Every capo from Palermo to Naples held their fire because they knew Don Matteo and Commander Lorenzo stood behind you! Without our shadow, the Corleones will hunt you down like a stray dog, slit your throat, and dump you in a ditch before sunset!”

“Then let them try,” I said.

Behind Matteo, I heard the cork of another champagne bottle pop, accompanied by Carmela’s melodic, teasing laughter: “Matteo, darling, the jet skis are ready! Stop arguing with the staff and come swim!”

“I’m coming, tesoro,” Matteo called back over his shoulder.

When he returned to the phone, his voice was poisoned with icy venom.

Listen to me, Elena. If you step behind those monastery gates, don’t ever think of stepping back out. If you ever show your face in Palermo again, I will have Lorenzo treat you as a traitor to the syndicate. Die in the dark, you ungrateful wretch.”

Click.

The connection went dead.

I looked at the satellite phone for two seconds. Then I slid the battery out, snapped the encrypted SIM card in half between my fingers, and tossed both into the stone fountain of Saint Rosalia.

The water swallowed the pieces with barely a ripple.

The Falcone name was severed.

The vow was ready to claim me.
