The Blue Rejection That Ended My Marriage Chapter 06

The Blue Rejection That Ended My Marriage Chapter 06

Sloane still couldn’t reach me, so she came to the hospital.

But Nathan stopped her outside my room.

“I need to see Elliot!”

“He’s resting.”

“Tell him to drop the lawsuit. He still needs me to pay for his surgery. This has gone far enough!

He gave a humorless laugh.

“Still needs you? Gone far enough?”

“Sloane, do you have a brain at all?”

Sloane stopped short.

“What do you mean?”

He folded his arms, his voice cutting.

“Elliot already had the surgery. That was when you were forcing him to sign that agreement!”

Sloane spun around and stared at Miles.

“This is what you called ‘not serious‘?”

Miles lowered his head.

“I thought Elliot was faking it. You’re the one who said he always acts out when he’s upset.

Sloane looked away from him and lowered her voice again.

“Elliot needs me right now. Let me in.”

He didn’t move.

“You were on the phone when he needed you most.”

“What exactly does he need you for now?”

Sloane went rigid.

A nurse came over.

“The patient needs rest. Please keep your voices down.”

Looking at the nurse, Sloane suddenly remembered the day Elliot told her he was having surgery.

What had she been doing then?

She had decided Elliot was just jealous, even as she used his late mother’s work as leverage to force him to help Miles get ahead.

In the end, Nathan called security, and Sloane and Miles were escorted out.

Even after they reached the hospital entrance, Sloane still seemed dazed.

Miles tried to placate her.

“Sloane, don’t be mad. Elliot’s being ridiculous. Why would he drag something this private out in front of other people?”

In the past, Sloane would have agreed. She would have thought I was the one making a scene.

But now all she could think about was the fact that while Elliot had been in surgery, she had been out buying Miles a car.

The realization made her sick with herself.

She turned to Miles.

“You hid the surgery from me on purpose?”

“I just wanted Elliot to sign the agreement faster. I was doing it for you-”

Sloane clenched her fists, her expression turning colder.

“Were you doing it for me, or for yourself?”

Miles watched her for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed.

“Regretting it now?”

“Everything I did, you allowed. You let me control his spending requests. You let me take his designs.”

The words made Sloane stumble back a step.

He was right.

At Elliot’s lowest point, Miles had become the knife cutting into him–but Sloane had been the one holding the handle.

Sloane’s expression grew more strained by the second, and she couldn’t say a word.

When Sloane returned home, she found a medical report on the coffee table.

[Patient: Elliot Hale. Severe lumbar spondylolisthesis with nerve compression. Significant risk of paralysis. Surgery recommended as soon as possible.]

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

Elliot had told her all along.

She was the one who had refused to believe him.

That night, she sat alone in the dark living room, her phone screen lighting up in her hand, going dark, then lighting again.

By morning, she finally sent Elliot another message.

Sloane: [Elliot, I really didn’t know about the surgery.]

Sloane: [We need to talk.]

Sloane: [As long as you don’t divorce me, you can name your terms. Just don’t do anything rash.]

Elliot never replied.

Later, his attorney contacted her. After laying out Elliot’s demands, he ended with one final

statement.

“Ms. Mercer, the hearing is scheduled for a month from now. Please make sure you appear.”
