Bryson gave me eighty thousand a month. Elsie only ever forwarded eight hundred. She pocketed the rest.

On top of that, she’d embezzled plenty while working as his secretary. Her behavior left all her coworkers

bitter.

Now it all came due.

Elsie killed my baby. I’d planned to head back home, hire a lawyer, and make her answer for it.

But before I could take action, she was already staring down prison time.

After the court case wrapped up, Bryson looked like he’d aged a decade.

He came to my hometown over and over, begging for forgiveness, pleading for me to come back to him.

I shut the door on him every single time.

Even my mom, after hearing everything I’d been through, had nothing for him.

“Get lost! Stay away from my daughter! Hasn’t she suffered enough because of you and that secretary?”

“If you actually care about her, sign the divorce papers!”

After three months of back-and-forth, Bryson finally agreed to the divorce.

He said he’d walk away with nothing, leaving all his assets to me.

“Olive, I’ll do anything if it means you can live a good life.”

When he spoke of the money, his jaw clenched with rage.

“If it wasn’t for all this wealth, I never would’ve spent months away on business trips. I never would’ve given Elsie the chance to hurt you and baby. I don’t want any of it.”

He asked to take our baby’s ashes with him.

And I let him.

“Olive, can we really never go back?”

I nodded. “Never.”

By then, I’d been with Caden for a short while.

The night we made it official, I dreamed of my baby. She was smiling at me.

She said, “Mommy, don’t be sad. Last time was an accident. I’ll come back to your tummy soon. I’ll be your

baby again.”

I found peace after that dream.

Not long after, I got pregnant again. Smiles returned to my face. I knew my baby had come back to me.

Maybe she just decided Bryson didn’t deserve to be her dad and wanted a new one instead.
