“She’s dead,” I said numbly. “A week ago, your precious secretary came to seize money. She threw the baby

into a tub of cold water on purpose.”

“I begged her on my knees to let her go. She wouldn’t.”

“She said I was just a breeding tool. That even if the kid died, I could make another.”

“That night, the baby spiked a high fever and started convulsing. I rushed her to the hospital in my arms, but

the doctors said she was too small. There was nothing they could do.”

I recounted what happened that night in a flat voice. I’d replayed these words countless times inside my

head.

Bryson’s hands fell away at once. He stumbled, his face turning deathly pale.

“Elsie? When did she come here? Why would she do something like that?”

“Olive, stop messing with me. This isn’t funny at all!”

Bryson immediately began searching for the baby, but he checked every room and found no trace of her.

Seeing the empty nursery, his eyes turned red. “Where’s the crib? What did you do with it?”

I ignored him. I carefully pulled out a photo of the baby from my bag and stroked it gently.

“Those were her things. They got cremated with her.”

“You’re lying!”

I ignored Bryson’s increasingly furious shouts behind me, my gaze still tenderly fixed on the photo.

“My baby was only a few months old, so quiet and sweet. She never fussed or cried as long as she was full.”

“But I was a useless mother. I never even managed to feed her properly…”

“She loved opening those big eyes and smiling at me. Everyone who saw her said she was adorable.”

Stunned and heartbroken by my state, Bryson suddenly rushed over and pulled me tightly into his arms.

“Olive… what happened to you? Are you angry with me?”

“This is my fault. I was too busy with work. I neglected you…”

“I’ll call Elsie right now and find out exactly what happened.”

Bryson pulled out his phone, about to make the call when the door swung open and Margaret walked in.

“Don’t bother.”

“Mom?”

She smiled at Bryson’s stunned face. “Elsie just finished her prenatal check-up. She’s staying at the hospital

now to rest and stabilize her pregnancy.”

Bryson’s expression darkened. “Whatever her business is, she needs to come here at once.”

He ignored Margaret’s protests and went to the balcony to call.

“This kid…”

Margaret couldn’t stop him. She turned to me, apologetic.

“Olive, everyone has their fate. I know you’re heartbroken over the baby, but there’s nothing any of us can do

to change it.”

I didn’t respond. Since last time, Margaret had chosen Elsie’s side.

I’d seen Elsie post on her Instagram more than once, bragging about shopping trips and fancy dinners they

shared.

They acted like a perfectly happy mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

I had nothing to say to people like them.

But she kept rambling on, trying to comfort me.

“Olive, your baby had a genetic disorder. She was never going to survive long.”

I turned to her coldly. “Who told you my baby had a genetic condition?”

Margaret blinked. “Elsie. She showed me the baby’s medical report.”

“Olive, I know you’re hurting as a mother, but this is a fact we can’t change.”
