By the time the ambulance arrived, there was already blood pooling beneath Odessa

Her mother was sobbing hysterically, clinging to her and refusing to let go

“Odessa, stay with mel Please, sweetheart!”

The ambulance sped away with its siren wailing

The lobby fell completely silent

The coworkers who had been whispering about me just minutes ago now wore very different expressions

Some lowered their heads awkwardly, some stared at me in shock, and someone muttered under their

I ignored them

I put my marriage certificate back in my bag and went upstairs

My manager called me into her office. She looked at me and sighed.

“Maren, do you want to take the rest of the day off and deal with this?”

I nodded

Tm sorry this caused such a scene at work.”

She shook her head.

“You’re a victim in this too. We’ll have HR handle what happened today. If any videos end up online, Legal will

take care of it.”

“Thank you,” I said quietly.

After leaving the office, I went straight to a family–law firm to discuss the divorce.

It was already dark by the time I came out.

I had just gotten into the car when Thayer called.

I stared at his name for a few seconds before answering.

He didn’t even give me a chance to speak.

Maren, how could you be so cruel?

His voice shook with barely contained anger

“Odessa lost the baby‘

“She was five months pregnant. The baby was already fully formed!”

“You can hate me all you want, but you had no right to hurt an innocent baby!”

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, all I felt was cold

“Thayer, did you forget that her mother came to my office and called me a homewrecker? That she was the

one who tried to hit me first?”

“Odessa just wanted the truth!”

His voice rose sharply

“Why did you have to upset her? Why did you have to pull out our marriage certificate in front of everyone?”

I almost laughed.

“So I’m your legal wife, your mistress and her mother show up at my workplace to insult me and hit me, and

I’m not even allowed to prove who I am?”

There was a second of silence on the other end.

When Thayer spoke again, his voice was colder.

“You knew she was pregnant. You knew she couldn’t get that worked up.”

“Well, now she’s lost the baby. Are you happy?”

The whole thing was so absurd I could barely process it.

He sounded devastated over the baby Odessa had lost.

What about the baby inside me?

“I have something to tell you too,” I said quietly.

Thayer cut me off.

“Come to the hospital right now and apologize to Odessa.”

“She just lost her baby. She’s in a terrible state. You need to come.”

Then he hung up

The driver glanced at me cautiously in the rearview mirror

“Ma’am, are we still going to the same address?”

I put my phone back into my bag

“No Take me to Northpoint Medical Center

Some things needed to be said face–to–face

By the time I arrived, Odessa had already been moved into a hospital room.

Her family was gathered outside

The moment her mother saw me, her eyes went red with fury

“You actually have the nerve to show up?”

She lunged toward me, but a relative grabbed her before she could reach me

“Maren Winslow, you killed my grandbaby! I’m not letting you get away with this!”

Thayer stood outside Odessa’s room.

He looked like he had aged overnight, his eyes bloodshot with exhaustion.

But when he looked at me, there was no guilt in his expression.

Only blame.

“Go inside and apologize.”

He lowered his voice

“Maren, stop making this worse.”

“Odessa’s been through enough. She didn’t know about us. I lied to her too. Why are you taking your anger

out on her?”

A weak sob came from inside the room.

“Thayer…”

He immediately turned and went in.

I followed him.

Odessa lay in the hospital bed, her face deathly pale and her eyes swollen from crying

The moment she saw me, her body visibly trembled.

“Maren, I really didn’t know you and Thayer were married.”

Tears slid down her cheeks.

“If I had known, I never would’ve been with him.”

Her mother snapped from beside the bed.

“Stop standing there acting like you’re above everyone! So what if you’re his wife? My daughter lost her baby

because of you. You’re going to pay for this!”

“That’s right. You owe her compensation!”

“And a public apology!”

“If you refuse, we’ll put this all over the internet and make sure everyone knows you caused a pregnant

woman to lose her baby!”

Thayer didn’t stop them.

He only looked at me, exhausted and disappointed.

“Maren, you went too far this time.”

“Odessa lost her baby. You owe her an explanation.”

I raised my hand and slapped him across the face.

The room went silent.

Thayer’s head turned with the force of it. He stared at me in disbelief.

My palm stung, but my voice was perfectly steady.

“You cheated on me, and somehow you think you’re the one who gets to judge me?”

I reached into my bag, pulled out the divorce papers I had already prepared, and threw them at him.

The pages scattered across the floor.

“Thayer Bellamy, I want a divorce.”

Odessa’s mother suddenly screamed and lunged at me like she’d lost her mind.

“You killed my grandbaby, and you think you can just walk away?”

“I’ll make you pay for what you did!”
