Not His Bride Anymore Chapter 15

“Callan. People don’t change because of one sentence. You failed me at the wedding. You chose someone else every single time I needed to be chosen. That wasn’t a mistake. That’s who you are.”

“And I don’t need someone who won’t choose me by instinct.”

“I only hope I never see you again.”

His hand fell. The light in his eyes went dark.

I brushed off my sleeve. I kept walking.

Through the glass doors, I saw him. Standing there. Slowly crouching down.

His hands covered his face. Shaking.

In that moment, he finally understood. He hadn’t just lost a wedding.

He’d lost the only person who’d ever truly loved him.

Three years later, my overseas assignment ended. Mom and Graham came

back with me.

Returning to this city didn’t hurt. I only felt anticipation.

After finishing my handover at the company, I was officially promoted to Tech Director. My boss threw me a welcome-back dinner.

At the dinner, I heard about Callan from a colleague.

After he came back from Ireland, he’d been gone so long without notice that several major projects collapsed.

The board convened. They removed him from his position.

His father had had enough. He publicly cut Callan off. He started grooming

the next heir.

Celeste lost Callan as her lifeline. She started chasing other rich heirs.

She became the joke of their circle.

Maybe fate has a sense of irony. After all the twists and turns, the two of them ended up together. They got married.

Without the money and power, the daily grind of a poor marriage scraped every illusion raw.

Callan resented Celeste for doing nothing but shopping.

Celeste resented Callan for being broke. For failing to give her a better life.

Not long ago, Celeste ran off with some businessman in Los Angeles.

Callan didn’t care. He just holed up in his rental. Drank.

When my colleague finished, they gave me a relieved look.

“Eden. Thank goodness you got out early.”

I smiled. I nodded. I lifted my glass and took a sip.

Yeah.

Thank goodness I broke out of that cage before it consumed me completely.

Now it held someone else.

And I’d finally found the road I was always supposed to walk.
