Kieran frowned, the taut string inside him pulling tighter. “What do you mean?”

“I checked the security footage by the front door. While you were talking in the living room that day, she was standing outside the whole time.”

The footage showed everything. She stood outside for a long time, crying the entire time,

Kieran’s hand slowly lowered, phone still in it.

“Dad!”

Elsie ran back clutching her smartwatch, her little face red from crying.

“Dad, it won’t go through! The bad woman won’t answer me!”

Kieran closed his eyes.

So it was really over.

Elsie cried late into the night.

“Does Mommy not want me anymore?”

“When is she coming back?”

Kieran had no answer.

At last, Elsie cried herself to sleep in his arms, tears still clinging to her lashes.

He carried his daughter back to her room, then sat alone on the living-room sofa.

A message from Nessa appeared.

[Kieran, get some rest after you put Elsie to bed. Mom and I will come over in the morning to help with her.]

[Don’t worry. Whatever happens, I’ll face it with you.]

Kieran stared at the message. For one moment, a thought surfaced.

If Seren really wasn’t coming back, maybe being with Nessa wouldn’t be so bad.

She was gentle, understanding, and always put him first…

But the next second, his wolf growled.

The fierce rejection made Kieran shut off the screen.

Nessa wasn’t Seren.

He’d never imagined truly losing his mate.

He knew exactly who his heart belonged to.

The mere thought of another man catching Seren’s scent, holding her hand, or even leaving a new

mark on the side of her neck.

Kieran’s chest felt as if it were being torn open.

His wolf slammed against the walls of his mind in a frenzy.

That was his mate.

He wouldn’t allow it.

The days after Seren left Blackridge were far more chaotic than Kieran had imagined.

No one had ever really noticed how much she took care of each day.

The arrangements for the Pack nursery.

The handoff of injured wolves between the Healer Lodge and the warrior patrols.

Even many of the records the Pack Council needed were organized by Seren and left on Kieran’s desk before he ever asked for them.

Before, he only had to reach out.

Now, everything was a mess.

The Pack Council had spent three straight days chasing him for confirmation of the winter patrol

list.

The house was even worse.

Nessa came every day.

But she didn’t even know what Elsie liked.

Elsie wouldn’t take a single bite of the breakfasts Nessa made.

Nessa didn’t know how to do laundry. She sent Elsie’s favorite jacket to the wash and lost it is the

communal laundry room.

She didn’t even know that Elsie needed a moonlight lamp left on before bed.

Elsie got into three fights with her.

The third time, she screamed through her tears, “I don’t want you anymore! I want Mommy!”

That day, Elsie tore free of Nessa’s hand and ran outside. She slipped in a puddle by the door and hit her forehead on the step

By that night, her fever had climbed to 1022 degrees.

Nessa stood outside the hospital room, her expression just as grim,

“I think I’ve done more than enough, but Elsie doesn’t appreciate any of it. All she can think about is Seren!TM

“I’ve given so much, and you don’t appreciate me either All you can see is that daughtes of yours.”

“I’m exhausted. I need some time alone to clear my head,”

The door slammed shut

Kieran sat alone in the hospital infusion room with Elate in his arma unesi dawn.

Delirious with fever, Elsie kept burrowing into his chest
