His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 15

His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 15 On The Other Side Of The Glass

When Cecily’s face appeared on his secretary’s phone, Gareth felt an unexpected sting behind his eyes.

“Where did you find her?”

Even his voice was shaking.

“I got to know quite a few Sutton employees while we were working together,” the secretary explained. “They’d heard she’d gone abroad. Since she graduated in Greyhaven, I looked into her university classmates. One of them had posted online congratulating her on joining a company there.”

For the first time in days, the weight pressing down on Gareth lifted.

He contacted a friend in Greyhaven while packing, then caught a flight.

His friend was waiting at the airport when he landed.

“I have news about the person you asked me to find.

“You know how close–knit the university’s alumni community is. One of our old classmates has been planning a get–together at his house. A name was added to the guest list a couple of days ago: Cecily Sutton.

“As luck would have it, the party’s tonight. I’ll take you straight there.”

Gareth was overjoyed.

The drive from the airport took only an hour, but it felt endless. He kept going over moments from their years together.

When he was exhausted, Cecily would pull him outside to fly kites. When he grew impatient with people trying to flatter him, she would smile and smooth things

over.

Everyone else called him cold and unfeeling. Only Cecily said he was just trying to look cool.

He leaned wearily against the seat with his eyes shut. He had to admit that no one understood him better.

Daphne might have captured his desire for a while. She had never reached his heart.

The car stopped outside a detached house.

Now that seeing Cecily was only moments away, his eagerness gave way to nerves. Even the short walk from the car left him feeling unsteady.

His friend led him in and greeted the people grilling on the lawn. Gareth stood nearby, then happened to glance through a brightly lit window.

He went still.

Was that Cecily?

The woman inside was nothing like the immaculately styled figure in designer dresses he remembered. She wore a cream blouse and jeans that showed off her long, slim legs. With her curls tied in a swinging ponytail, she looked capable and effortlessly pretty.

His heart gave a sudden jolt. Something stirred in him, almost as it had when he’d first met her on their arranged date.

Cecily leaned against the kitchen counter and tasted a little cream from a spoon, her eyes narrowing with pleasure.

Benedict lifted a bite of grilled fish to her mouth.

She ate it eagerly, her smile growing wider.

“That’s incredible. You went into the wrong business. You should have been a chef.”

Benedict laughed and tapped the insulated containers beside him.

“There’s beef and potato stew with red wine, grilled fish, barbecue ribs, and burnt- top cheesecake. Don’t forget to take them when you leave.”

Busy enjoying the food, Cecily nodded absently.

Benedict packed her portions first, then carried the remaining dishes outside for the other guests.

Their former university classmates crowded around Benedict as he brought out the food.

“You cooked all morning, and this is all we get? Where’s the rest?”

“Come on, admit it. Did you eat it before we got here?”

Amid the noise, Gareth slipped past everyone and entered the house, making his way to the dining room.

Cecily was happily enjoying her private helping when she glanced back and saw him. She choked and began coughing hard.

He rushed over to pat her back.

“Easy, Cecily. Slow down.”

She shoved him away and stared as though she’d seen a ghost.

“Gareth? What are you doing here?”
