The private investigator Jenna hired worked fast.

“Nora, you need to be mentally prepared.”

Her call made me freeze.

I slowly opened the photos she sent.

One after another.

After I finished looking, my phone slipped to the floor.

From the moment I was at the hospital, I had been mentally prepared.

I had imagined that when I saw proof of him cheating with another woman, I might collapse, might

go mad with pain.

But now, all I felt was fear.

He had dinner with Vivian Shaw.

He drove Vivian home.

He took her to the hospital.

In every public place, there was no intimate contact between them.

The way he looked at her did not cross a single line.

They looked like a perfectly ordinary man and woman who happened to know each other.

I could imagine what he would look like if I placed these things in front of him and asked for a

divorce.

He would slowly raise his head and look at me like I was an unreasonable child.

Helpless and indulgent.

“Nora, if you think I’m too close to her, I won’t speak to her again.”

“It’s my fault. I made you overthink. I didn’t do well enough.”

He would act as if she had nothing to do with him, just like every other time I had gotten jealous

because he walked too close to some woman.

“Nora, did you maybe misunderstand?”

Jenna sounded hesitant on the phone.

Even my best friend wasn’t sure.

Adrian had done it too well.

How could I be wrong?

My fingers tapped into the chat.

A new photo appeared.

A luxury restaurant.

An intimate man and woman.

Adrian had taken me there once.

I hadn’t fit in there at all. After I came home, I developed a high fever.

Back then, he had kissed my forehead tenderly.

“I won’t take you there again. I can’t bear to see you uncomfortable.”

That secret garden, the one that belonged to him and his friends, was a place I never stepped into

again.
