After Adrian carried me into the passenger seat, he leaned down and tried to kiss me.

I covered my mouth and dodged.

His body went stiff.

“Nora, what now? Are you mad at me again? I was wondering why you let me off so easily just now. So this is where you were waiting for me.”

He pinched my nose, his face full of indulgence.

“I’m really not used to you being that sweet and generous.”

He lowered his head and gently kissed my fingers.

“This version of you actually makes me feel better.”

I had been spoiled by him, and by myself too. I always acted exactly how I felt.

Ever since I agreed to date him, if he so much as looked at another woman too long, I would throw a soft little tantrum.

It gave him a terrible headache.

This time was no different. I pretended to be clingy and spoiled.

“Who told you to take another woman to the hospital without my permission?”

“Your punishment is that you can’t touch me.”

“Silly girl. It was a matter of life and death. My Nora just has a sharp tongue and a soft heart.”

He carefully buckled my seat belt, then took a special wet wipe and cleaned my hands for me.

I lowered my head slightly and watched the man fussing over me. My eyes grew wet.

Someone who loved me like this, why would he betray me?

“Don’t go look for Jenna. I’ll take you home.”

He started the car and looked at my face with concern.

“You don’t look good.”

The excuse I had used when I left home that morning was that I was going shopping with my best friend, Jenna Carter.

As Adrian spoke, he handed me a thermos and fed me a sip.

The water was the perfect temperature.

He was always like this. Every day, he prepared warm water for me. He hand-washed my clothes.

If I left his side for more than two hours, he would keep calling until I picked up.

In three years of marriage, except for business trips, he came home on time every day.

He acted like he wished he could tie me to his body.

No one thought he didn’t love me.

Neither did I.

How could it be like this?

Tears seeped from the corners of my eyes. I forced them back and looked at the man in front of me, a man overflowing with love.

All of it was fake.

Fake.

I took a deep breath.

“Go to…”

Before I could finish, his phone chimed.

He didn’t look at it, as if it were some meaningless message.

My phone chimed at the same time.

It was a photo of a report, followed by one simple sentence.

“I’m pregnant.”

The air in the car instantly grew thin.

I could barely breathe.

Pregnant.

Last night, he had still been wrapped around me, begging me to have a child with him. A few hours later, he had a child with someone else.

I stared blankly out the window.

Adrian seemed about to say something, but his phone chimed again.

He frowned after reading it, then turned to me with an apologetic look.

“Nora, there’s an emergency at the company. I can’t take you home.”

“Is it urgent?”

He nodded and leaned over to unbuckle my seat belt.

“Sorry, baby. Take a cab.”

I got out of the car by instinct. Before I could even stand steady, the door slammed shut.

The speeding car nearly knocked me over.

He didn’t even look back.

For the first time, he abandoned me for another woman.
