“What happened?”

Luca’s brow tightened. He stepped forward quickly.

“What’s going on? How’s the mother? How’s the child?”

“The mother… she…”

The doctor’s face was pale as paper.

He couldn’t get a full sentence out,

“Where’s your conscience?!” Iris shoved through the crowd, voice sharp.

“We’re asking you a question! How’s the mother and child?!”

My mother hunched over, gasping for air.

“My daughter–how is she? And my grandchild? They can’t be hurt!”

Still no answer. Her eyes nearly burst.

She lunged forward and grabbed the doctor by the shoulders.

“Say something!”

The doctor winced under her grip. Then he seemed to snap back to reality.

“The mother… she’s hemorrhaging heavily-‘

“The child-”

Before he could finish, my mother’s eyes rolled back.

“Celine! My daughter!”

She collapsed, screaming. My father and Iris couldn’t hold her up.

She just crumpled to the floor.

My father’s face went dark. Iris’s eyes were red–rimmed.

Luca leaned against the wall. Unreadable.

“That monster Nova! That murderer! That animal!” My mother sobbed on the floor.

“How could I have raised someone so despicable?”

“Why wasn’t it her bleeding out instead?”

Theard that and laughed. Laughed and cried at the same time.

Tears streaming down my face.

A hollow ache in my chest.

Memories from childhood flashed before my eyes.

Before Celine was born, I was the only princess in the family.

We didn’t have much back then.

My mother pinched every penny.

But when I pointed at a ten–dollar donut at a street stall-

she bought it without a second thought.

One glance from me, and she’d take it without hesitation.

Luca turned away from the camera.

My father and Celine both dropped their heads.

Everyone except my mother.

She crawled over on her hands and knees.

Grabbed the livestreamer’s pant leg. Looked up at the camera.

“Yes! My daughter is like this because Nova–that cruel, vicious child–did this to her!”

The livestream exploded. Views skyrocketed.

It overtook the video–straight to number one on trending.

Then the OR doors opened again.

Another doctor came out.

“The mother is unconscious. There’s a risk she may become a vegetable.”

My mother froze. Her face twisted.

“The child…”

“The child’s alive. But…”

She hesitated, like she couldn’t find the right words.

Sighing, she finally said, “The baby’s premature. Already in the NICU.”

“Someone stay with the mother. The rest of you can go see the baby.”

She paused, then added, “The baby has to stay in an incubator.”

“You’ll have to look through the glass.”

They nodded. After a quick discussion, Celine stayed at the OR.

Luca and my parents went to see the baby.

The livestreamer followed.

Luca frowned, about to stop him.

My mother jumped in.

“Let him follow!”

“My grandchild can’t even conie home to his family–stuck in an incubator.”

“All because of Nova. Everyone needs to know what she did!”

She was gasping for breath by the end.

Luca didn’t argue. He let it slide.

I followed behind them.

The NICU wasn’t far.

The closer we got, the more excited my parents became. Almost giddy.

My mother registered their names without hesitation.

The doctor’s face went stiff. Almost terrified.

She steeled herself and led them in.

Then she hurriedly said, “Don’t stay too long.”

And left without looking back.

I drifted toward the glass.

A scream tore through the air.

“What is that thing? Where did you hide my grandchild?!”
