The next day, nothing seemed different.

I still woke up early and prepared breakfast for the three of us.

I laid out the clothes Jase would wear that day at the foot of the bed.

Then I woke up Riley, helped her get dressed, and got her ready for the day.

At eleven in the morning, I packed Jase’s lunch and drove to his company.

Jase was the company’s Vice President.

Whenever the company had team dinners or gatherings, he usually brought Riley and me along.

So most of the employees knew who I was.

When they saw me carrying a lunch box that day, they smiled and greeted me like usual.

The elevator took me up to the eleventh floor.

I said hello to the receptionist and walked toward Jase’s office.

The moment I pushed open the door, I froze.

A young woman who had just graduated from college was sitting in Jase’s executive chair.

She looked young and inexperienced, with long hair falling over her shoulders.

Jase was standing behind her.

One hand rested on the back of her chair.

The other pointed at something on the computer screen.

The sound of the door opening made them both look up.

My eyes immediately landed on the number above Jase’s head.

Only three hours had passed.

When Jase saw me, he looked surprised for a second.

Then he smiled.

“Hi, baby.”

“You came here?”

His voice was full of surprise.

“Who is this?”

I looked at the girl.

“Oh, this is Hannah.”

“She’s Lauren’s assistant.”

Lauren was Jase’s Executive Assistant.

She was thirty-five years old and known for being sharp and capable.

Jase explained,

“Lauren took time off for her wedding.”

“She won’t be back until next week.”

“Hannah is filling in for her these few days.”

“She’s fresh out of college and doesn’t have much experience, so I’m training her.”

“Yesterday, I stayed late because she entered a set of numbers wrong.”

His tone was like he didn’t give a damn. Like getting the data wrong didn’t matter at all.

The girl looked at me nervously.

“Hi, Mrs. Holloway.”

Jase noticed the lunch box in my hand.

“You brought lunch?”

Then he turned to Hannah.

“Come on, eat with us.”

“My wife’s cooking is the best.”

He said it so naturally.

So casually.

I didn’t even have time to react before Hannah stood up and sat beside Jase.

In the past, whenever I brought Jase lunch, I always packed enough for the two of us.

Then I would sit with him and eat together at the office.

Even Lauren had only eaten the food I made once.

I thought Jase wanted the three of us to have lunch together.

But I never expected him to hand the fork directly to Hannah.

The movement was familiar.

His tone was completely natural.

“Go ahead and eat.”

“We still have work to finish after this.”

Hannah took the fork and thanked him.

The entire time, he never once asked if I had eaten.

I sat across from Jase.

Watching the two of them eat.

A strange feeling I couldn’t explain slowly filled my chest.

Hannah took a bite of the meat.

The moment she tasted it, she covered her mouth.

“This is so good!”

“Mr. Holloway, you’re so lucky.”

“Your wife is amazing.”

Jase had a proud smile on his face.

But the number above his head dropped again because of Hannah’s compliment.

At that moment, I finally understood what that strange feeling was.

The two of them kept chatting while they ate.

Completely forgetting I was even there.

“Emma.”

“Clean this up when you’re done.”

“Then you can go home.”

“I’ve still got work to do.”

I looked at Jase with a faint smile.

Then I said,

“Jase.”

“I haven’t had lunch yet.”
