He Came Back Ten Years Too Late Chapter 07

Ethan rushed to the place his assistant had described.

When he saw the little wooden marker,

with the words “Grave of Aiden Carter, beloved son of Jasmine Carter” carved into it with a fingernail, he looked as if lightning had struck him.

Only after a long moment did he grit his teeth and speak in a hoarse voice.

“No. I specifically told the hospital to take good care of Jazz and the baby!”

“Besides, I left Jazz a large sum of money. How could anything have happened to Aiden?”

Cassidy stared at the grave marker.

A flicker of delight crossed Cassidy’s eyes before she put on a mournful expression.

“Ethan, Jazz can hate us if she wants, but the baby was innocent.”

“Did she really let him die of a fever just to make us feel guilty?”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

But then he shot to his feet.

“I don’t believe she’d do that to Aiden. I’m going to ask her myself.”

As he moved, my translucent body was pulled away from the grave against my will.

I didn’t understand why, but struggling did nothing.

All I could do was follow him.

On the helicopter,

Ethan kept swiping through his phone.

Then he remembered.

At the time our marriage had ended in the ugliest way possible,

he’d blocked every number I had.

Ten years had passed. That number had long since been disconnected.

Luckily, the helicopter soon landed on the beach.

There was no sign of my body.

Only a hunched figure sat beside the place where I’d fallen.

Ethan frowned and walked over to ask her a question.

After hearing him out, Aust Rosa paused, then tossed a few more sheets of paper into the burn barrel.

“Husband? Her husband died years ago.”

She lifted her head and stared at him with open contempt.

“When her baby died from a fever, her husband didn’t show up.”

“When she lost the will to live and threw herself into the sea, her husband didn’t show up.

“When her voice gave out and she risked her life for the money to buy a boat ticket, her husband still didn’t show up.”

“And now you’re telling me you’re her husband? Where were you while she was suffering all those years?”

Warmth spread through my chest as I looked at Aunt Rosa.

She was the only person I knew in the village.

She’d pulled me from the ocean and checked on me from time to time over the past ten years.

Once she learned what I’d been through, she’d held me in her arms.

With tears in her eyes, she’d cursed fate for taking everything from me

and then refusing to let even the years I had left end in peace.

And judging by what I was seeing now,

she’d handled my funeral arrangements, too.

Her questions hit one after another, making Ethan’s face grow uglier by the second.

“I think you misunderstand. Jazz had a large sum of money from me. She couldn’t possibly have lived this miserably.”

Aunt Rosa gave a dry laugh.

“You sent her and her baby into a psychiatric hospital because you were done with her.”

“Did you really think she’d be able to hold on to that money?”

Ethan went rigid.

A bleak sorrow rose in my chest as I watched him.

Before we left the island, Ethat really had given me a substantial amount of cash.

It really would have been enough for me and the baby

to keep us comfortable for ten years, maybe longer.

But he’d forgotten the world he’d sent us into.

He’d forgotten the way people looked at me while he held Cassidy and watched me being dumped on the

island.

A woman whose wings he had cut off with his own hands and then cast aside

couldn’t use that money to escape another hell.

It was gone before long.

All I had left was the butterflyfish ring.

Everyone was afraid of getting involved.

No one dared take it from me.

How laughable. The token I’d once treasured above everything

couldn’t even buy a single dose of medicine for my dying child.

It finally dawned on Ethan.

His chest heaved violently. After several deep breaths,

he spoke slowly.

“Where is Jasmine? I’ll find her and explain everything myself.”

“You’re too late.”

Aunt Rosa quietly dropped the last sheet of paper into the burn barrel.

“She’s dead.”
