He Only Lets Me Call Saturdays at Nine I Call Someone Else Chapter 04

The entire office suddenly fell silent.

The spot where the book had hit still hurt.

“Lilah, Adrian and I have already…”

She cut me off, her voice rising. “Already what? You think I don’t know? You’re the one who sends those long messages every Saturday night, aren’t you?”

“You shamelessly cling to a man who has a girlfriend, and you still pretend you’re innocent?”

She stomped on the notebooks scattered across the floor.

“Wasn’t I good to you, Roselyn? I thought you were my friend. You knew Adrian and I were getting engaged, and you still got involved with him?”

Then Lilah suddenly said, “Get down on your knees.” Her eyes were red, but there was nothing warm in them.

“Get down on your knees, and I’ll believe you.”

One of Lilah’s close coworkers raised her phone and pointed the camera at me.

“What a slut. Exposing the other woman is what I do best. Watch me put you on blast.”

The whispers around the office swelled.

“You really can’t judge a book by its cover…”

“Didn’t you notice? Every time Adrian was involved, Roselyn acted like that…”

“She must’ve planned it all along.”

I tried to explain.

Lilah looked at me, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly. “Get her things out of here. Adrian won’t want someone like her around.”

And that was what they did. Someone came over and shoved me while others swept everything from my desk into a cardboard box.

When security arrived, the guard spoke politely but firmly, “Ms. Johns, please come with me.”

I was escorted out just like that.

The doors closed behind me. I crouched down to pick up my things when a car suddenly stopped in front of me.

A moment later, the window rolled down, revealing Adrian’s frowning face.

“How did you end up like this? Get in.”

Lilah leaned out beside him, her sweet smile back in place.

“Roselyn, get in. Otherwise, you’ll start playing the victim again. I’d hate for you to make me post that video. You have plenty of ways to get back at me, don’t you?”

I got into the car without looking at either of them.

Lilah leaned over and wrapped her arms around Adrian’s.

“Adrian, Adrian! There’s a new movie out. Can we go see it?”

He hummed in agreement.

He didn’t talk much while driving, but Lilah always managed to draw him into conversation.

Every time she said something, he’d respond with indulgent patience to every one of them.

I rested my head against the car window and stopped listening.

As if she suddenly found my silence boring, Lilah spoke again.

“Adrian, if I ever fell into the water with that washed-up woman, who would you save?”

There was a two-second silence. Then Adrian answered.

“You.”

Bang.

My vision started to blur. The world seemed to tilt as warm blood ran down from my temple.

I forced my eyes open and saw Adrian in the driver’s seat.

His hand was shielding Lilah’s head. His entire body had turned toward her, his shoulder covering her.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, I was in a hospital.

I looked at the empty bed beside me.

“The people who came in with me… where are they?” I asked a nurse.

The nurse hesitated, then replied, “Ms. Simpson only had some minor scrapes, but she kept saying she felt dizzy. Mr. Hayes went with her for more tests. Before he left, he asked us to take care of you.”

Take care of me.

He could never stay and do it himself.

I lowered my head and yanked the IV from my arm.

Suddenly, those four years felt like a joke.

I didn’t wait for him. After completing my discharge paperwork, I went back to our apartment one last time.

Everything I’d accumulated over the years fit into one small suitcase.

There was no reason to take anything that wasn’t meant to come with me.

I left the employee ID badge I’d worn for four years on the table, then I booked a flight to Floravia.

Before the plane took off, I looked at my phone one last time.

9:03 p.m., Saturday.
