“Genevieve, you never used to be like this.

“When you were little, if even one thing didn’t go your way, you’d cry and fuss and make sure everyone knew exactly how you felt.

“You wouldn’t have folded in on yourself like this.

“Now, before you say anything, you first decide whether it’s going to make someone else angry.”

My mother’s voice shook.

“Dante turned my daughter into this. How could I even go

back to him?

“On your birthday, did you really jump into that pool just for the necklace?

“If I hadn’t gotten there in time, were you ever planning to come back up?

“When you woke up, there wasn’t a single spark in your eyes. Even now, when I think about it, I’m terrified.”

A flash of black cloth passed by the doorway.

It was my father.

The next day, he signed the separation declaration, giving up the right to command our return in the Ricci family’s

name.

My new school was in Santa Monica, outside the Ricci sphere of influence.

The students went to class, studied, talked, and went

home.

No one spent their days calculating who was protected by which family, and no one ostracized someone just because a man in power said so.

They competed over grades, but they didn’t use it as a weapon to hurt each other.

Without Blair spreading rumors behind my back, I finally made a few friends.

They knew what had happened with the Ricci family and were angry on my behalf, but they didn’t press me about the parts I didn’t want to talk about.

They just invited me to the engineering lab and to do homework with them.
