He Chose Her, But I Inherited His Empire Chapter 09

When I woke up, I thought I was dead.

Otherwise, how could I be seeing my mother?

She sat beside my bed, her eyes red, her black coat still damp from the pool.

She looked almost exactly as I remembered, only her gaze was colder, harder.

“Mom?”

I barely dared to breathe the word.

I was afraid this was a dream, that she would vanish if I blinked.

“Yes. Genevieve, Mommy’s here.”

She took my hand.

“Don’t be afraid. Tell me, did someone push you in?”

Before I was fully awake, I heard Blair’s voice.

“Helena, you’ve misunderstood. No one pushed her. We were just joking around. Something of hers fell into the pool, and she jumped in after it.”

Only then did I realize the room was crowded. Blair was there, along with two of her friends, the estate butler, the doctor who had long been on the Ricci family payroll, and my father.

Two guards I didn’t recognize stood outside the door.

They didn’t take orders from my father. Their eyes were fixed on my mother.

My father hadn’t taken his eyes off her since she arrived.

There was shock in his gaze, but also the wild joy of having her back.

He looked as if he still couldn’t believe she was real.

My mother turned to Blair.

“Who are you?”

Her voice was glacial.

“I have only one child. Genevieve.”

The color drained from Blair’s face. She shot a desperate look at my father.

“Dante,” my mother asked, her voice sharp, “who is she?

A child you had with someone else?”
