He Chose Her, But I Inherited His Empire Chapter 05

I was locked in my room all night.

The next morning, my forehead was swollen and throbbing.

I wanted to get the first-aid kit, but the moment I opened the door, I saw cameras being set up in the main hall.

An interview crew was gathered around my father and Blair.

In the back row, just out of frame, sat several Ricci capos. They were there to confirm the arrangements for Blair’s investiture in three days and would not discuss family business in public.

My father had Blair seated at his right.

On camera, it looked like a father doting on his daughter.

To the capos, it meant the head of the family had publicly chosen her.

The host asked, “Mr. Ricci, you manage such an enormous empire of legitimate businesses, so you must be very busy. How did you raise such an outstanding daughter?”

My father smiled.

“Blair has always been exceptional. She’s my only daughter, so no matter how busy I am, I always make time for her.”

Blair wrapped an arm around his.

“My dad is the best father in the world. I only wish he could spend a little more time with me. We still haven’t gone to Europe this year.”

My father looked at her, indulgence written all over his face.

“Once your birthday is over, we can go anywhere you want.”

Standing in the doorway, I was numb to scenes like this.

But it reminded me of ten years ago.

Back when my mother was still here, I used to cling to her and say whatever popped into my head.

She had a four-leaf clover necklace she had worn for years. I told her I liked it, and she immediately unclasped it and put it around my neck.

“Genevieve, take good care of it. Your grandmother left this to me.”

She stroked my hair, a trace of sadness in her eyes that I hadn’t understood at the time.

Then the host brought her up.

“Does Blair ever think about Helena? She was such a talented actress. I’ve heard you want to enter the film industry, too. Was she an inspiration?”

The room went quiet.

My mother was a forbidden subject around my father.

But this was Blair’s first official interview, her public debut. In three days, she would receive the Ricci crest in front of the capos.

If she could produce an heirloom passed down from Helena, it would solidify her position.

Blair lowered her head, her voice just sad enough for the camera to catch.

“I miss Mom all the time. I want to become an actress because I want to be like her.”

She took out a four-leaf clover necklace.

“This is what Mom left me. Whenever I’m sad, I look at it, and it feels like she’s still with me.”

The moment I saw that necklace, every sound in the world vanished.

My mother had given that to me.

Blair had taken so much from me over the past ten years.

This was the only thing I had left.

I rushed forward and snatched the necklace from her.
