The Last Mystery Box Says No Chapter 06

The Last Mystery Box Says No Chapter 06

Weston sat in his study, files spread out in front of him.

His assistant pulled security footage from the wedding planner, three years old.

At the engagement banquet, the moment the mystery–box crate was carried onto the stage, the camera

swept across Sabrina’s face.

She’d frozen, turned to look at her parents, lips moving–as if saying “what’s going on.”

Her mother grabbed her wrist and pressed her down, smiling.

Weston paused the footage, zoomed in.

He studied Sabrina’s expression for a long time.

That kind of blindsided panic–you can’t fake that.

His assistant handed over a bank statement.

“The $1.88 million from the mystery box, it left the account the same day it landed. The recipient was her

father.”

“The next day it split into two payments–one went to Brielle’s down payment, the other into her mother’s

investment account.”

“And Sabrina’s account?”

“Not a single dollar ever went through it.”

Weston leaned back in his chair.

Three years ago, he’d thought she’d conspired with her family to fleece him.

Three years, he’d used the mystery boxes to humiliate her.

And she never got a cent of it.

“Keep digging.”

“Look into what happened that night.”

That night, he’d gotten black–out drunk after paying the mystery–box arrangement, lost consciousness in a private VIP lounge at a downtown bar.

He’d always assumed he’d made some drunken mistake of his own.

Not until today, when his assistant pulled the bar’s records and camera footage.

The lounge camera caught Brielle pushing the door open.

No hesitation. She’d even brought a room key.

And twenty minutes before that, Brielle had bribed a server to slip something into his drink.

He’d mistaken her for Sabrina.

Later, she’d pulled the same trick again, and gotten pregnant with his child.

“Mr. Ashcroft, one more thing.”

His assistant laid two scanned marriage certificates side by side on the desk.

“The one with your wife–the registration number’s forged, it doesn’t exist in the county system. The one

with Brielle–that’s the real one.”

Weston stared at the red certificate.

He remembered the day he’d gone to sign, he’d run into Brielle at the County Clerk’s Office.

She’d said Sabrina had a last–minute emergency and couldn’t make it, so she’d come to handle it for her.

He’d been drinking heavily for a week straight, dazed, hadn’t thought twice, and signed.

He’d assumed he was signing his marriage to Sabrina.

She’d filled in her own name instead.

Weston pressed his hands against the desk, veins standing out one by one.

“And Harper? What’s her connection to Brielle?”

The assistant pulled up another record.

“Harper had a defaulted co–signed loan three years ago, facing a lawsuit. Brielle used your money to pay it

off, on the condition that she keep tabs on Sabrina. Weekly reports.”

“Every time Sabrina vented to Harper, it showed up in Brielle’s phone the next day.”

Weston closed his eyes.

He couldn’t process it–everyone close to her had betrayed her. Including him.

He suddenly stood, pushed the window open.

The sky outside was black, wind pouring in.

He gulped down air in ragged breaths.

Then asked his assistant, “Where’s Sabrina? Where is she?”

“Flight records show she flew to Hawaii three days ago. The car that picked her up is registered under Callum Voss.”

Callum Voss.

Weston had heard that name before.

Twelve years ago, in that fire–Sabrina had run in and pulled someone out, gotten burned herself, still had a

scar on her back.

“Find her.”

“Mr. Ashcroft, Voss’s security detail-”

“I said find her!!”

The assistant said nothing more.

Weston stood by the window, wind rattling the papers.

The diary on the desk was still open to the last page, the writing too faint under the light.

But it felt, to him, heavier than anything, pressing the breath out of him.
