Ivy’s scream echoed through the basement, raw with desperation.

Like a small animal guarding its food, Ivy staggered toward the spill. She ignored the broken glass and tried to scoop up the liquid with her bare hands.

Rowan took a step back in disgust.

“She’s insane. Who acts like this over one bottle of cheap juice? This is what happens when you spoil someone rotten.”

Silas looked at her with open contempt.

“Look at the way you raised Ivy, Mom. She’s scraping food off the floor like she hasn’t eaten in weeks. She doesn’t have an ounce of dignity.”

I hurried over and pulled Ivy away from the broken glass. She was too weak to stand and collapsed unconscious against me.

Holding Ivy’s cold body, I slowly raised my head and fixed the three fools before me with an icy stare.

For eight hundred years, I had obeyed our family’s code. I had refused to kill innocents, surviving on synthetic blood so I could live among humans.

I thought kindness would earn respect and ten years of care would earn Silas and Rowan’s love.

I had been wrong.

Rosie shuddered and hid behind Silas.

“Mrs. Vesper is looking at me like she wants to kill me. I know she’ll come after me, Silas, and I’m scared to stay here. Let’s go.”

Her performance reignited his anger.

Silas glanced at Ivy in my arms before turning on me.

“Why should we leave? This is my house. Ivy’s the one who needs to get out.”

He looked toward Rowan.

“Lock the door.”

Rowan understood immediately. He hurried over and slammed the heavy soundproof door shut. Then he threw the nearby breaker. The overhead lights went dark, leaving only the dim green emergency lights along the floor.

Silas drew his dagger and advanced on me one slow step at a time.

“Don’t blame me for being ruthless, Mom. For ten years, you worked us like dogs just to protect someone as useless as Ivy.”

“I’m grown now, and I can protect the person I choose. Once you’re dead, everything will be mine, and Rosie can finally feel safe.”

Silas stopped in front of me.

“I’ll make it quick.”

I held Ivy and didn’t even try to dodge.

Silas mistook my stillness for surrender. He raised the dagger and drove it toward my heart. The blade tore through my clothes.

Rowan remained beside the door, watching without a hint of remorse.

Silas pulled back the dagger, ready to strike again. Then he froze.

He looked at his hand, then at my chest. There wasn’t a single drop of blood.

I slowly closed the distance and patted Silas’s cheek with a smile.

“My dear son, I taught you plenty of ways to kill.”

“What I never told you was that Ivy and I were never human.”
