Three Tracker Alerts Led Me To Uncover My Whole Family’s Secret Betrayal Chapter 09

Piper had dated someone in college.

The Holdens and Chase an knew about it because the first time Piper and Chase slept together, she was

still with that guy.

Chase had a work dinner that night; Piper’s sorority had an event at the same bar. He got hammered.

When he woke up, Piper was lying next to him, crying.

Then Mara walked in.

He tried to explain. But the facts were the facts. Even if he hadn’t meant it, his body had betrayed her.

Mara forgave him eventually.

But he had to make things right with Piper too.

Because of that night, Piper broke up with her boyfriend.

At first, Chase just wanted to look out for her.

But compared to Mara’s paranoia and panic, Piper was easy. Calm. Undemanding.

And little by little, he drifted.

He kept going further down the wrong road.

Piper, meanwhile, would show up at the Holdens‘ house crying–about how sorry she was, about losing her boyfriend.

She cried so much that the Holdens started feeling guilty. They started spoiling her. Trying to make it up to her.

But these photos weren’t old.

In them, Piper’s belly was already showing.

Trent demanded an answer. Piper stammered, said nothing.

Holly smiled coldly.

“Since you can’t explain, I will.”

“Piper never broke up with that guy. The night Chase got drunk and ended up with her? That wasn’t an accident. They planned it. They wanted his money. All these years, Chase’s wallet has been feeding both Piper and her real boyfriend.”

Piper’s face went white.

“That’s not true, Chase—she’s lying!”

Holly didn’t flinch.

“Check it yourself. You own a company–it shouldn’t be hard to verify. And while you’re at it, get a paternity

test on that baby. You might be in for a surprise.”

Piper’s whole body shook.

She looked up to deny it, but Chase’s face was terrifying.

So were the others‘.

They surrounded her.

Holly closed the door behind her. Then she called the police.

By the time I came back from my trip, the house deed had been transferred back.

Holly sorted my luggage and told me what happened after she left.

Chase, in a rage, hit Piper. Hard enough to make her lose the baby.

Piper sued him for domestic assault.

“They were married–that’s a felony charge. He’s getting divorced, but he’s not walking away clean. Damages, and probably a few years inside.”

I listened quietly. I felt nothing.

Those people–they had nothing to do with me anymore.

But a while later, the Holdens and Sasha tracked Holly down through her law firm. They found her address in Crestwood.

Holly was furious when they showed up at her door.

I stopped her from calling the cops.

“It was bound to happen. Let me talk to them.”

She put her phone down but stayed right there.

I knew she was watching out for me. I didn’t ask her to leave.

flooked them over. In such a short time, Walter and Eileen had gone more than half gray.

“Mara…”

I held up my hand before they could finish.

“I know why you’re here. I’m not coming back. And don’t come looking for me again. The only reason I’m even talking to you right now is so I can say this clearly.”

Their words died in their throats. Their eyes went red.

“From now on, you don’t have a daughter.”

“Trent, you don’t have a sister.”

“Sasha, you don’t have a friend.”

“Or you can just think of me as dead in that fire. Actually–I did die in that fire. The Mara standing here has nothing to do with any of you anymore. We don’t know each other. Don’t come back.”

I started to close the door. A hand grabbed the frame.

“Sis. I’m sorry. We all owe you that. And Chase–he couldn’t come, but he wanted us to say he’s sorry too.”

I nodded.

“I heard you. But I don’t forgive you.”

The door shut.

I stood by the window later and watched them walk away.

They grew smaller and smaller until they were gone.

I didn’t think we’d ever see each other again.
