Reid didn’t like that.

‘But you just came back. I want the whole world to know you’re mine again.”

I couldn’t help but smile. I took his hand.

He only got like this around me. This stubborn, boyish side of him.

“We’ll get our chance. Right now, we’ve got bigger things to worry about. Don’t be impatient.”

“Yeah. You’re right. As long as I’ve got you, the rest can wait.”

The next morning, Reid wanted to drive us both in.

I shut that down. Separate cars.

“If we show up together, people will talk. Remember what you agreed to?”

He let out a dramatic sigh.

“Fine. A promise is a promise.”

“But I’m getting answers fast. You won’t have to hide for long.”

I smiled.

“I know.”

He leaned down and kissed my cheek. Then he left.

I watched him go from the window.

This was what living felt like.

I got ready and took a cab in.

At the office, I fell into the routine: greet the team, make Reid’s coffee, sort the files.

To everyone else, we were just boss and assistant. Nothing to see.

But behind closed doors, the second we were alone, he pulled me in.

He pressed his face into my shoulder. “I missed you.” His voice was raw.

“This morning, before you walked in, I sat here wondering if yesterday was just a dream.”

I held him tighter.

“I was afraid of the same thing. But I’m here. This is real.”

“The second you walked through that door this morning, I knew. We made it.”

The rest of the day passed normally. He worked. I handled files.

Late in the afternoon, his phone rang. The moment he answered, his face went hard.

“Keep digging. Whatever it costs. I want a name. And if you can get your hands on them, bring them

to me.”

He hung up and pinched the bridge of his nose.

I set a cup of tea in front of him.

“Was that about whoever’s behind the accident?”

He took my hand and nodded.

“We’ve got some leads. But pinning down who it is is going to take time.”

“Whoever this is has serious power. That’s the only way they’ve stayed buried this long.”

A knot tightened in my stomach.

Reid pulled me close. “We’ll figure it out. And whatever happens, I’m right here. Nobody’s touching

you again.”

That evening, once the building emptied out, we slipped into the same car and drove home.

I leaned my head against the window and watched the city blur past.

I was so tired. My limbs felt heavier than usual, like my new body hadn’t caught up with everything

yet.

I drifted off without meaning to.

When I opened my eyes, I was on the couch.

And there, a few feet away, a dog was tumbling around with Reid.

My heart leapt.

“Scout!”

His ears perked. He spun around and bolted straight for me.

I opened my arms and he launched himself into my lap, covering my face in kisses.

I had no idea how he knew it was me. I didn’t care. I was laughing for the first time in what felt like

forever.

Reid walked over, grinning.

“Told you. I’m not the only one who sees right through you.”

“You’re both too smart for your own good.”

He ran his fingers through my hair.

“Next time, and there’d better not be a next time, come to me first. Don’t let me sit in the dark wondering. Promise me.”

My smile faded. I looked him dead in the

eye.

“No. Nothing like this will ever happen again.”

He blinked. Then the corner of his mouth lifted.

“You’re right. This is it for us. No more goodbyes.”

I pressed my face into Scout’s fur and nodded.

“I fought too hard to come back. I’m not wasting it.‘

That was when my phone went off.

I glanced at the screen, expecting work. The message was from a number I didn’t recognize. My

blood went cold.

Reid caught the look on my face.

“Who is it?”
