He Gave Me a Beaded Toy Car and Bought Her a Luxury Car Chapter 02

“Nadia, if you just admit you were wrong, I can go easy on you.”

“Faye is a key employee. Her abilities speak for themselves. I’m not targeting you. I’m making decisions from the company’s perspective.”

“You’re my wife. I need you to understand. I don’t want this to turn into a whole thing and make people think our marriage is in trouble.”

I laughed. So that’s why he suddenly softened. It was about his reputation.

I’d gotten word while filing the divorce papers. Faye had deliberately leaked to reporters that Tristan’s marriage was on the rocks. Small rumors were already circulating.

The company was in a critical phase. Any small factor could affect funding or an IPO. That’s why he was in such a hurry to force me into submission.

In the past, the moment he walked out of the office, I’d cave without him having to say much. I’d do whatever he wanted.

But now? I didn’t want to consider him at all anymore.

“People only need to apologize when they’ve done something wrong. What exactly did I do wrong?”

I hadn’t said a single word about this whole situation. He’d just pinned the blame on me. It was laughable.

“Nadia, you still don’t even know what you did wrong. You’re beyond help!” Tristan’s angry voice came through the line.

“I’ve already drafted a public apology letter under your name. I’m warning you—don’t let it happen again!”

Then he hung up in a huff.

Minutes later, the company website posted my “apology letter.” The comments underneath were a mixed bag. Half supportive. Half critical.

Over the years, he’d always done whatever he wanted. He cared less and less about my opinion. And now, to pull Faye out of the public fire, he couldn’t even be bothered to ask me first.

I stopped paying attention to all of it. I messaged my team to meet for dinner. I needed to update them on the new company.

“Boss, we saw that post on the company site. Nobody thinks you wrote it. Just say the word and I’ll hit up my media contacts. We can put every shady thing Faye’s done on blast.”

“Boss, a husband who takes another woman’s side over yours? You can’t stay with him.”

My team meant well. They were trying to talk sense into me.

I smiled bitterly. Of course I knew Tristan had changed. He wasn’t the man who used to love me with everything he had.

Back when we were long-distance, he’d flown nearly two thousand miles to see me fifteen times in a single month. He didn’t even have time to sleep properly. He kept that up for two years.

But now? He bent every rule for Faye. He ignored company policy. He went after other employees. This wasn’t just favoritism anymore.

“Boss, look—Faye posted again. Mr. Hale actually spent Father’s Day with her dad!” One of my team members held up his phone, looking disgusted. He shook his head at me. “Boss, why are you still married to a man like that? You gonna sit him down at the family table next Thanksgiving?”

The photo showed Tristan smiling like he’d never been happier.

Eight years of marriage. He’d never once come home with me. Never once had a meal with my parents. Every time I asked, he used the company as an excuse.

And now here he was, rushing to celebrate Father’s Day with someone else’s family.

I gripped my glass and drained it. “I already filed for divorce. I’m getting the papers tomorrow.”

My team’s eyes went wide. Then they all started pouring me drinks.

“That’s our boss. You know when to walk away.”

“Tonight, we drink until we drop!”

Some of these people had watched me and Tristan fall in love. The others had watched us get married. It made sense that they worried I’d get sentimental. But I knew who actually had my back.

I raised the bottle and matched them. “Fine. Let’s drink until we drop!”

The drinking went on until dawn. I stumbled home exhausted. The moment I pushed the door open, I froze.

The place was trashed. Furniture overturned. Decorations scattered everywhere. Tristan sat on the couch with a dark expression.

“Why weren’t you answering your phone?!”

A glass flew across the room. It shattered at my feet. The sound cut through the fog in my head. I sobered up fast.

“My phone was off.”

I stepped around the glass and walked inside.

Tristan’s voice was cold. “Do you have any idea how long I waited for you? I even picked up your favorite takeout. And you were out having dinner with your team behind my back!”

“Faye was right. You’ve always had it out for her. You’re rallying your team to isolate her and make her life hell.”

I looked up and met his furious glare.

I remembered the time Faye put a snake in my car while Tristan was on a business trip. I’d been just as furious then. He’d brushed it off like it was nothing.

But now he was this angry? Because I had dinner with my team without telling him? Because Faye claimed I was isolating her?

“Tristan, do you have a functioning brain? What does my team having dinner have to do with her? Which one of us is the director—me or her?”

Tristan shot to his feet. “Watch your tone!”

“I didn’t come home to fight with you. Just hand over the multi-million-dollar project. I’ll smooth things over between you and Faye. We need to put an end to these rumors going around the office.”

So his sudden kindness was for Faye again. He’d even come to me first. True love, I guess.

“Fine.” I smiled coldly.

Tristan nodded like this was exactly what he expected.

“I’m doing this for your own good. Faye is talented. The company’s at a critical point. I don’t want any friction between you two.”

“And you need to get your temper under control. Stop being jealous and going after Faye. She—”

Faye. So affectionate.

I cut him off with a light laugh. “One project won’t clear things up. Why don’t I hand over the director position too?”
