My parents looked at the deposit notification and tried to decline it.

“Maddie, you work hard for that money. Don’t give it to us. Keep it for yourself.”

“Take it.”

“I’ve made up my mind. I’m going back Monday to resign.”

“Then I’m coming home and getting proper treatment.”

When they heard that, both of them went still.

When they spoke again, there was something urgent in it.

“Absolutely not. You can’t quit your job.”

I looked at them, startled.

Sylvia seemed to realize she’d overreacted.

She tugged at Gordon’s sleeve and turned back to me with a smile.

“Why don’t you think it over a little more, Maddie?”

“Even if you’re getting treatment, you don’t have to be here for all of it. What happens to your

career if you quit?”

Simon worked on me, too.

He said jobs were hard to come by at the moment, and I shouldn’t do anything rash.

“Simon, save it. I’ve already decided.”

“Part of it is making up for what Mom and Dad went through these two years because of me.”

“And part of it is that the pressure in a big city can’t be good for my condition.”

“Besides, I’m good at what I do. I can find a job anywhere.”

When they saw I wasn’t budging, none of the three said anything else.

My parents made a point of saying they were only holding that money for me.

Early the next morning, I flew back to the city where I worked.

In the office. I laid the whole thing out.

My supervisor, Ray Hollis, had a complicated look on his face.

“Maddie, are you sure you want to resign?”

“In all the years you’ve been here, I’ve never seen a sign of dissociative identity disorder of delusional symptoms in you.”

“Nobody else on the team has raised anything like that either. Are you sure it isn’t a misdiagnosis?”

Honestly, I had my own doubts.

Even if identity switching caused memory gaps, the people around me should have noticed something.

Ray saw me hesitate and sat up straighter.

“Maddie, here’s what we’ll do.”

“Don’t rush the resignation. I know a psychiatrist with a real reputation.”

“I’ll explain your situation and set up a time for you to get evaluated again.”

“A second opinion never hurts, and the care here is a lot better than what you’d get back home.”

“Go home and rest for a few days and wait to hear from me.”

After I left the office, I went to the bank to set up text alerts.

I still had questions.

So I asked whether they could pull the security footage from the ATMs outside.

Since there was no dispute or case attached, the employee declined.

On my way out of the bank, my eyes went to the ATM vestibule.

I thought about how I’d supposedly gone in and out of that spot pulling cash, and I couldn’t

remember a second of it.

It left me shaken.

Somebody happened to push the door open right then, and my eyes followed her without meaning

When our eyes met, she looked tense.

She watched me warily and hurried off, glancing back over her shoulder the whole way.

She had decided I was some creep.

I laughed at myself.

I was about to leave when a text came in.

That account I had no memory of opening had just received a $30,000 deposit from Sylvia.

“Mom, why are you moving money into that account again?”

I called her right away.

She said it was all my money anyway, and it wasn’t right for her and Gordon to be sitting on it.

So they’d decided to send it back to me a piece at a time.

Two days later, Ray called and told me to go to the hospital.

I went through a full battery of tests and evaluations, and it ran until early evening.

In the exam room, Alan Barrett looked over my results with a serious expression.

My first instinct was that my condition had to be severe.

Then he

gave me his conclusion, and there wasn’t a trace of doubt in his voice.

“Ms. Shaw, you don’t have dissociative identity disorder, and you don’t have delusional disorder.”
