I immediately pulled my marriage certificate from my bag.

“This is the marriage certificate. Do you believe me now?”

Relief had barely started to loosen my chest when Derek snatched the certificate away and tore it apart.

more than enough of it today.”

He pulled out his phone to call.

Then hurried footsteps sounded from nearby.

Hope flared inside me.

Three men stopped at the mouth of the alley.

Derk’s gaze moved over the angry red rashes covering their arms and faces.

From his reaction, it was obvious what disease he believed they had.

He and Serena immediately put more distance between themselves and the three men.

“Guys, don’t let her fool you. She’s my wife. I was overseas being treated for cancer, and she cheated on me while I was gone. I’m just teaching her a lesson.”

Serena joined in, looking helpless and regretful.

“I’m her best friend. I can vouch for him. She really did cheat.”

My heart dropped.

“They’re lying! I didn’t!”

The three men looked at Derek and Serena, heard how convincing they sounded, and believed them immediately.

One of them glared at me.

“I hate cheating women more than anything. F*cking disgusting. Man, if you don’t mind, I’d love to teach this sit a lesson myself.”

He pointed toward the rashes covering his body.

Derek went quiet for a moment.

Then he leaned toward Serena and murmured something to her.

She took the little girl and left.

Only after the two of them had completely disappeared from sight did Derek look back at the three men.

He put on a mask.

Then he crouched beside me slowly, smiling with deliberate cruelty.

“Maya, weren’t you so fond of sneaking around behind my back? Good news. I found three men for you, and from the look of them, all three seem to have AIDS. Now I get to see exactly how shameless you can be with men like that right in front of me.”

My pupils tightened.

All I could do was stall for time until he found me.

“Still trying to scare me with Julian Cross? Only an idiot would believe that nonsense. I haven’t touched you in years, and the first time I see you again, you’re already sleeping with somebody else. Yeah, it pisses me off. But who cares? I don’t want a body that’s supposedly been used by half the city anyway.”

He turned to the three men and pointed at me.

“As you see, she cheats like breathing. Who knows how many men have already used her. I was planning to divorce this b*tch anyway. Running into you three must be fate. She’s free. Just do whatever you want with her.”

My blood seemed to freeze inside my veins.

I looked desperately at the three men.

“I’m Mrs. Cross. Get me out of here, and Julian Cross will reward you. Name any amount you want.”
