My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 04

A week earlier, at my premarital screening, they’d found an unexplained coagulation disorder.

I’d brought the report to my mother, but before I could say a word, Brynn’s call pulled her away.

“Is your blood sugar low again? Don’t worry, I’ll be right there!”

She grabbed her bag and swept past me without a glance.

“Put it in the drawer. I’ll look at it when I get back.”

Looking at Mom’s confused expression, I realized that report must still be lying quietly in the drawer.

I gasped for breath, forcing the words out weakly.

“Mom… I have a clotting disorder… I can’t give blood…”

My mother froze. She reached out, touched my shirt, then let out a cold laugh.

“Your clothes are practically dry with blood already. Clotting disorder? That’s quite the excuse!”

“That’s because of the glass—”

“Enough!” Her voice turned sharp, eyes cold as ice.

“Brynn got hurt in your place, and you can’t even manage to give a little blood?”

“You’re a real disappointment, Adeline.”

She waved to a security guard.

“Get her into the emergency room!”

I was hauled onto a gurney like a rag doll.

Weston’s brow furrowed the moment he saw my face.

“Doctor… Adeline doesn’t look right…”

“She’s just embarrassed because I caught her lying!”

My mother was busy with the instrument tray, not even turning around.

“I’ve been practicing medicine for decades. I can tell the difference between someone really hurt and someone faking it in a heartbeat.”

Brynn lay reclining on the fully equipped VIP bed, surrounded by attending physicians from every department.

Unlike me—filthy and disheveled—she was spotless, her arm neatly bandaged.

She looked at me, pale and full of quiet suffering.

“If Adeline doesn’t want to, just forget it. Mom, you’ve done so much for me—I owe you everything.”

“Not only do I not mind taking the hit for Adeline in the passenger seat today, but I’d gladly trade my life for hers without a second thought!”

Her voice was generous, but thick with hidden resentment—as if it hadn’t been her, gleefully claiming the front seat, just hours ago.

My mother rushed to comfort her, then turned back to me, disappointed.

“If you could be even half as thoughtful as Brynn, I’d count myself lucky!”

Weston came over and took my hand.

“Adeline, don’t be scared. It’s just a little blood. I’ll bandage you up the second it’s done.”

His tone was gentle, yet left no room for discussion.

He pressed down on my hand with immense force.

My heart grew colder along with the rest of my body.

“There!” My mother held up two still-warm bags of blood, voice flat.

“See? Nothing to it. And it’s not like giving a little blood will hurt you.”

“Weston, get her some hot tea.”

The tea was brought to my lips. I couldn’t even manage a sip.

For someone with internal bleeding, drinking anything was a death sentence.

Seeing my eyes closed and unmoving, my mother’s temper flared again.

“Are you sulking again? Adeline Marsh, can you just listen for once?”

“Weston, make her drink it!”

Weston hesitated, then pinched my jaw and forced the tea down my throat.

I choked violently.

“Adeline, don’t be difficult. You just gave blood, this’ll help you recover faster.”

He patted my hand.

“Once Brynn’s hooked up to her transfusion, we will take care of your wound.”

The room around the bed grew quiet.

I could faintly hear the cheerful voices near the VIP bed drifting further and further away.

“Brynn, you’re so brave, didn’t even cry during the stitches!”

“Weston, does Brynn want that trendy dessert cake? Remember to grab it later.”

“Of course, don’t worry—I’ll get one of every flavor for her.”

The three of them sounded so warm together, like they were the real family.

I lay alone in the dark corner and suddenly vomited a pool of blood.

I remembered—today was supposed to be the day we got our marriage license.

The heart monitor let out a single beep in the darkness, then slowly flattened into one long line.
