“I’m not signing.”

My brother clamped a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t be difficult. After she went missing, Sophie slept under bridges, ate trash. You can handle a basement. It’s temporary. Once she calms down, everyone will welcome you back.”

Pain shot from my head down my spine. My vision started doubling. I begged. “Give me my phone. I need an ambulance.”

Ethan grabbed my wrist. “If an ambulance shows up today, what will the neighbors think of Sophie? Tough it out for two more hours. When the relatives leave, I’ll take you myself.”

“I’m in so much pain. I can’t hold on.”

I struggled—the phone slipped. Sophie caught it first. “Were you going to record us and later tell everyone the whole family is bullying you?” She powered it off and shoved it in her pocket. “Sign the papers, and you’ll get it back.”

The doorbell rang. Relatives streamed in with gifts.

No one asked if I was in pain. They all gathered around Sophie, listening to her horrific stories about being abducted—sleeping in train stations, getting beaten, nearly being sold off to someplace far away. Mom sobbed so hard she could barely stand. Dad turned away to wipe his eyes. Ethan kissed her forehead. “No one will ever hurt you again.”

By the coffee table, I used the wall to pull myself up. The edge of my medical folder peeked out from the bottom of the shoe cabinet. If they just saw the report, they’d have to believe me.

My fingers touched the folder—

A heel slammed down on my hand. Sophie leaned in close, her voice barely a whisper. “No one’s taking you to the hospital today, Lena. However desperate I felt in those three minutes waiting for you ten years ago—today you’ll repay it double.”

She snatched the folder, turned, and tossed it into the master bedroom. The door shut in my face. A key slid into the lock. Sophie locked the door from the outside.
