My Fiancé Married My Long Lost Sister on Our Wedding Day Chapter 04

“When did they find you?”

The room went quiet. Mom jumped up. “Today’s a happy day—why dredge up the past?”

“Mom, I’m just asking when she came back.”

“Lena, don’t push her.” Sophie’s eyes went red. “How long I’ve been back doesn’t change the fact that you lost me.”

Ethan pulled her close. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

The pink diamond caught the light, stinging my eyes.

I’d seen that ring five times at the jewelry store. Every time, Ethan said it was too expensive. The last time, I’d joked, “When I finish my illustration commission, I’ll buy it myself.” He’d tapped my nose. “Who buys their own ring? Wait—I’ll get you something better.”

Better meant a plain band under two thousand dollars. The pink diamond was on her finger.

“Take it off.”

Sophie pressed herself against Ethan. Dad’s voice was hard. “It’s just a ring—are you really going to fight your own sister over it?”

“It was bought with my money.” Before the wedding, Ethan said the new house needed work and transferred two hundred eighty thousand dollars from our joint account. He swore every penny would go toward our home.

The fancy new bedding, the shoes, the flowers—it was all for the house. Just not mine.

“It’s joint property—what’s the difference?” Ethan kept his voice mild. “Giving Sophie security is the same as you atoning. You always say you love me—are you really that stingy?”

My stomach lurched. I made it to the bathroom and retched for a long time.

When I came out, my brother had opened my bag. Pills lined up on the coffee table. “Painkillers, sedatives, anti-nausea.”

Sophie picked up a bottle. “Lena, you came prepared just to avoid apologizing.”

“Put it down.” I rushed over, dizzy, and hit the table corner. The bottle fell, white pills scattering.

Mom didn’t help me. She shielded Sophie instead. “Why are you scaring her?”

“Those are my pills.”

“Just deal with the headache.” Dad glanced at the clock. “Photographer charges by the hour. Stop dragging this out.”

Sophie crouched down to gather the pills. “Let me put these away for you.” She poured them all back in, and as she passed the sink, her wrist tilted. The white pills disappeared down the drain. She turned on the water.

Ethan saw it. He only wiped her fingers. “Don’t touch that dirty stuff. Mom can buy Lena a new bottle.”
