He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 01

He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 01

I handed my husband two envelopes.

The first was my resignation as executive chef of his restaurant.

The second was a divorce petition.

He opened the first one. He smiled.

He never even touched the second.

“Finally,” Grant Whitmore said, leaning back in his office chair like a man who’d just been handed a winning lottery ticket. “Nora, honey, I’ve been waiting eight months for you to say it out loud.”

Eight months. That tracked. Eight months ago, he’d sat me down at our own kitchen table and told me that Whitmore House couldn’t afford my salary anymore. That a wife shouldn’t take a paycheck from her husband’s restaurant. That it was “family money either way.”

I took the pay cut. I kept working ninety-hour weeks. I designed every plate on the menu, negotiated every supplier contract, trained every line cook, and passed every health inspection with a perfect score.

And six weeks after that conversation, he hired Sienna Cole. Twenty-four years old, one year of culinary school, forty thousand followers, and a habit of touching my husband’s forearm when she laughed.

On paper, she was there to “lighten my load.”

“You should know I’m not doing a two-week notice,” I said. “I’ll do a full handover with Sienna today. Then I’m gone.”

Grant signed my resignation without reading past the first line. His pen moved fast, eager, like he was afraid I’d change my mind.

“You’ve been burned out for years,” he said, magnanimous now. “Take some time. Find yourself.”

What he meant was: Thank God I don’t have to fire you.

He couldn’t have fired me. Not cleanly. My name was on the supplier agreements. My name was on the health department filings. My name was on the liquor license application, the fire-suppression service contract, the commercial lease guarantee for the walk-in cooler.

I knew where every body in that building was buried, because I’d buried most of them myself, quietly, at two in the morning, while he was at the front of the house shaking hands and taking credit.

But he didn’t need to fire me. He just needed me to leave on my own.

So I did.

What Grant didn’t know — what he couldn’t know — was that I’d already lived this exact week once before.

And last time, I stayed.

“Nora.” He stood, straightening his jacket. He was still handsome in that expensive, effortless way that made critics forgive him things. “No hard feelings, right? We were great partners. We just stopped being great together.”

“No hard feelings,” I agreed.

Because I wasn’t there for feelings. I was there for the door.

He’d signed a catering contract for the Harbor Gala — six hundred plates, black tie, three courses, mayor in attendance — for a fee that wouldn’t cover the protein cost.

He’d signed a lease on a second location without a single dollar in reserve.

He’d let the sous chef order eighteen thousand dollars of shellfish for a menu I’d already told him wouldn’t hold.

And there was a critic from The Continental holding a reservation for the fourteenth. Anonymous. Grant didn’t know she was coming.

I gave it ten days. Maybe less.

“Sienna’s ready,” Grant said, checking his watch. “She’s been running things anyway, basically.”

“Has she.”

“Come on, Nor. She’s hungry. She’s got fresh ideas.” He shrugged. “You’ve got fifteen years of habits.”

Fifteen years. He said it like it was a flaw.

I picked up my bag and walked out of his office, past the wall of framed reviews with his face on every one of them, past the plaque that said WHITMORE HOUSE — CHEF/OWNER, GRANT WHITMORE.

My name appeared exactly nowhere in that building.

That was fine. In ten days, neither would his.

Behind me, I heard him pick up the phone. His voice dropped into something warm and private that he hadn’t used with me in three years.

“She signed,” he said. “It’s done, baby. It’s finally done.”

I smiled all the way down the stairs.

Sweetheart, you have no idea what you just signed.
