I hit the ground hard, and the pain was so blinding it took me a few seconds to realize what had just happened.

“Money? Callum, what money?”

Callum’s voice trembled with desperation.

“Most of the money I made working over the years went toward your medical bills, and I never said a word!”

“But the eight thousand dollars I saved was for the European Inter-Pack Exchange!”

“That was my only chance to train abroad before starting official Beta training.”

“Now it’s gone!”

By the end, his voice turned into a plea.

“I’ll give you anything. Just give me that eight thousand back. Please!”

Mom and Sylvie immediately rushed over to comfort him.

Dad’s face darkened as he yanked me up.

“Nola, no matter how upset you are, you don’t touch Callum’s money.”

“Tell me, where is it?”

“I didn’t take it!”

Cold sweat broke out across my forehead.

“I swear I didn’t take Callum’s money!”

Callum let out a bitter laugh behind me.

“I didn’t tell anyone about that money. I kept it hidden under the sofa.”

“You’re the only one who’s been sleeping on the sofa these past few days.”

“So tell me—if it wasn’t you, who was it?”

I racked my brain, but came up empty.

I was about to tell Callum to double-check if he put it somewhere else.

Mom’s ice-cold voice cut me off.

“Enough. There’s no point getting worked up.”

“She won’t give it back.”

She looked back at me.

Not like a mother looking at her daughter.

Like looking at a disgusting rat.

“Nola, we won’t ask you for that eight thousand.”

“Consider it payment for what Callum and Sylvie owed you.”

I collapsed on the ground.

I stared blankly at Mom.

I understood the meaning in her eyes.

In that moment, the very last trace of warmth in my heart died out.

Dad sighed, his face filled with disappointment.

“Let’s go home.”

The four of them quickly got into the car.

No one looked back for me.

Mom hesitated for a fraction of a second with her hand on the car door.

Then the door slammed shut.

The taillights vanished into the night.

I was left sitting on the pavement, dragging my crippled leg.

Passersby cast strange looks at me from time to time.

I didn’t know how long I sat there.

I glanced at my phone. A notification popped up on the screen.

I blinked, but no tears fell this time.

My leg had recovered enough strength.

I pushed myself up against the wall, dragging my right leg to the curb to call a rideshare to the airport.

Every step hurt.

Yet for some reason, for the very first time, I felt light.
