I Was Working Late, He Was Eating My Food and Falling for My Best Friend Chapter 07

Ethan hurriedly rejected the call.

“She made me change it after I lost a game. I’ll fix it right now.”

I got out without waiting for him.

Dad was awake and eating when I entered his room. He smiled weakly.

“I scared you, didn’t I?”

The tears I had been holding back finally came.

“Dad…”

The room was quiet except for my sobs.

When I regained control, I wiped my face.

“Dad, after you recover, come to Millbrook with me

That was where my new position was located.

He frowned slightly.

“Are you really ending things with Ethan?”

I nodded.

“Yes. I’ve made up my mind.”

His face was pale, but his expression was firm.

“Then that is enough. Ethan has never been dependable. I kept quiet because you loved him.”

“Your mother and I are used to the countryside. We won’t move with you. Just remember to visit

sometimes.”

Mom stroked my cheek.

“You’ve lost weight from all this stress. I can take care of your father Handle your own life and

don’t worry about us.”

For the first time in years, I did not have a mountain of work demanding my attention. Dad was

stable. I finally had the time and space to deal with the end of my relationship.

Outside the hospital, Ethan was speaking urgently on the phone. When he saw me, his face

tightened.

“Annie, something’s wrong. Lily is threatening to kill herself.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She called, crying and screaming, demanding that leave you for her. I refused. Then she made a

video call from the roof.”

Despite everything, the news shook me.

Lily had truly lost control.

“I called 911. Annie, come back with me.”

I avoided his hand.

“She probably doesn’t want to see me right now.”

Ethan stared at me in disbelief:

“She’s your friend. She might jump, and you’re not going to do anything?”

I laughed without humor.

“What exactly can I do? In her mind, I stole everything she wanted. If I show up, I might push her

further.”

He had no answer.

“She was my friend, but I can’t destroy myself trying to save her. The police are there. All I can do is hope she doesn’t jump.”

I walked away.

That night, I barely slept on the narrow cot beside Dad’s bed. When I closed my eyes, memories

returned.

I dreamed about the day I met Ethan at an outdoor freshman welcome rally. The sun was brutal,

and the crowd was packed shoulder to shoulder. I tried to stay on my feet, but low blood sugar

made the world fade.

I collapsed into Ethan and broke his nose.

Blood streamed from his nose, but he was more worried about me than himself.

“Are you okay? Please don’t die!”

Later, I bought him dinner to apologize. He confessed that he had been terrified I would die in his

arms.

“You wouldn’t wake up, and you were as white as paper. For a second, I thought the sight of my

bloody nose had killed you.”

I laughed, and we slowly grew close.

Back then, he seemed like the perfect boyfriend. He saved me a seat in class, brought me food, and took pictures of me on our dates. Everyone envied the way he treated me.

But I was never the only person he treated that way Maybe Lily had mistaken his attention for love and held on to that hope for too long.

When I woke, tears had dried at the corners of my eyes.

Ethan had sent a message half an hour earlier.

Ethan: [Lily is in bad shape.]
