A quick glance confirmed my suspicions.

He had arranged to meet Vivienne tomorrow night.

She would send someone to pick him up then.

Once Rowan realized there was no hiding it from me, he stopped pretending altogether.

With a cold laugh, he said, “Stare all you want, it won’t change anything.”

“A human like you, cold and bland, has no charm at all.”

“But you did buy me, and you’ve kept me for so long, so I’ll compensate you.”

“Compensate me?” I looked at him.

Rowan’s face darkened. “Don’t worry. I already found you a new shifter.”

“He’ll be here in three days.”

So trafficking me on the Dark Web was, in his mind, a generous act of ‘finding me a replacement.

What a clever fox. His talent for self-delusion was unmatche.

“You really want to go to Vivienne?”

My tone was light. “I’ll only ask you once. If you go, you are never allowed to come back.”

Rowan’s face stayed grim, and his answer was firm.

“I don’t want to stay in your house at all.”

Good.

Then I hoped this arrogant fox could survive the way Vivienne liked to play with shifters.

I said nothing more and turned away.

This was my bedroom.

I made Rowan move to the spare bedroom. Furious, he got out of bed barefoot and stormed off.

“Who cares about your bed?”

Only after I was alone in the room did I let the coldness drain from my body.

I leaned back in my chair and let out a tired sigh.

Maybe Vivienne had been right about one thing.

That did not sound very believable.

I closed the page and did not contact this new shifter.

The next day, Rowan did not speak to me until evening.

I had nothing to say to him either.

I only called Graham and told him to come pack up all of Rowan’s belongings and throw them out.

I had always been generous to those I considered my own, so I had given Rowan plenty of nice things.

At first, he thought it was too much trouble to take them.

But once he saw that they were really going to be thrown away, he frowned and went back to pack more than half a suitcase.

When Vivienne’s car arrived at the front entrance, Rowan dragged his suitcase out without looking back.
