“You told her you needed distance. So she was upset and went out alone…”

Rhett’s face went pale. The desserts and flowers slipped from his hands and hit the ground with a soft thud.

“What? How is she? I’m coming back right now!”

Sandy’s voice was frantic and accusatory.

“This is all Aurora’s fault! How can she still be so arrogant at a time like this? Get back here and see Vivian!”

The call ended. Rhett stood frozen, phone in hand, his face drained of color. A thousand thoughts seemed to race behind his eyes. He couldn’t budge.

He looked at me, his expression torn. Caught between the urge to keep pleading with me and the desperate

need to rush back to her.

I let out a quiet laugh.

He stared at me, confused.

“Rhett, after all this time, you haven’t changed. Not one bit.”

“It’s always the same. You coax me with pretty words, but your heart is somewhere else entirely.”

“You always say you’re just friends. That you have history, a deeper bond. That I shouldn’t overthink it.

But…”

“Does real, pure friendship look like this? No boundaries? Constant pining? Knowing full well the other has a mate, yet inserting herself into their lives again and again without a shred of respect?”

“We’ve been mated for years. How many times have you made me back down because of her? How many times have you brushed me aside for Vivian?”

“What if the roles were reversed? What if I was the one tangled up with another wolf, no sense of boundaries, no respect for our bond? How would you react? You’d lose your mind, wouldn’t you?”

My voice rose. I stepped closer with every question.

Rhett stumbled back half a step. His eyes darted away, uneasy.

“Rhett, you can’t have it both ways.”

He tried to argue, lips twitching, but no words came out.

When he finally looked at me again, my face was perfectly calm. Like none of it mattered anymore.

In that single moment, it seemed to finally hit him. I had truly severed our mate bond. This was real.

“I… Aurora, let me explain…”

He stood there helplessly, reaching for my arm.

I didn’t give him the chance. I turned, opened my car door, and got in.

Rhett lurched forward, desperate to stop me. “Aurora, wait! I still have things to say!”

I locked the doors and stared straight ahead. I drove off without a backward glance.

He ran after the car for a few steps, watching me disappear.

He didn’t even notice the crushed desserts smeared all over his favorite suit.

After that, Rhett still didn’t give up trying to win me back.

He tried every method of contact he could think of.

He even tracked down old acquaintances from Wolfspine Citadel who I hadn’t spoken to in ages, and sent

them to plead his case.

I couldn’t take the harassment anymore. I changed my number. Then I volunteered for border patrol duty, cutting myself off from the outside world completely.

When he couldn’t reach me, the noise slowly died down.

Eventually, my border assignment ended. The Alpha of my new pack recognized my contributions and rewarded me with leave to visit my parents.

I decided to return to Blackwood Manor. My parents were always busy, but I still held onto the hope of a family reunion.

When I landed, I found out they’d both been called away on patrol. They couldn’t make it back.

I unlocked the door with my key. The house was empty. No sign of life. Just a thick layer of dust coating

every surface.

I stood in the entryway for a long time, staring into the cold, silent living room.

After I finally cleaned the place up, I went downstairs to grab some essentials.

The moment I stepped outside, I saw a figure I never expected.

Rhett stood there, staring silently at the door. Like he was waiting for someone who would never come.

I didn’t know how long he’d been standing there. He looked worn down. He looked worn out, but he stayed

rooted to the spot, motionless.
