The happiest one, of course, was Vivian. Now she and Rhett spent every day together.

On my way out of Wolfspine Citadel, I overheard some pack members whispering about Rhett and Vivian.

“I heard the Alpha actually went with Vivian to explore the Forbidden Grounds just to cheer her up. Ended up scaring himself half to death.”

Someone had even snapped a photo of Rhett clinging to Vivian on the way back, his face pale as a ghost.

The pack members all agreed. Alpha Rhett braved the Forbidden Grounds for Vivian and they were clearly

fated mates.

I kept walking. I had no interest in hearing the rest of their story.

Anything involving Rhett no longer mattered to me.

Rhett kept his word, too. For the sake of his “good friend,” he never contacted me again.

Good. He was irrelevant now anyway.

I was about to board the plane, ready to power down my phone, when a message from an unknown number

flashed onto the screen.

“It’s been long enough. Have you finished reflecting yet?”

“Vivian says she’s not mad at you anymore. So I forgive you too.”

“We’re at the forest border. Come get me. Tonight, you get a chance to redeem yourself.”

The tone was as arrogant and self–important as ever. Like he was granting me a royal pardon.

Before, when my heart was still tangled up in him, I would’ve seen that message and typed back “okay” in an instant. I would’ve dropped everything and run straight to him.

But now, I deleted it without a second thought. Like clearing out junk mail.

Phone off. I went through security.

The plane touched down. I turned my phone back on, planning to contact the wolf who was supposed to pick me up and bring me to my new pack.

The moment it powered on, my phone exploded with missed calls and a barrage of text messages.

A flood of them. All from different unknown numbers. Even without saved contacts, I knew exactly who it

was.

[Why aren’t you replying?]

[I reached out first and you’re still acting so arrogant?]

[What are you doing? Why is your phone off?]

[Aurora, where are you?]

[What’s going on? Don’t scare me. I’m really worried.]

The gaps between messages shrank. The tone shifted. Panic crept in.

Then the last one landed. The words practically shook with shock and fury.

[Aurora, how could you break our mate bond behind my back?]

My phone kept buzzing. New messages poured in every second.

I was clearing notifications, scrolling down, when another call jumped onto the screen. I accidentally hit

answer.

The same unknown number.

I hesitated. Then I decided to settle this once and for all. A final severance.

I lifted the phone to my ear. Rhett’s voice came through, frantic and agitated.

The background was loud, like he was at some party.

“Aurora, how could you do something important without discussing it with me? I’ve been searching the entire territory for you. The Pack Elders said you already left Wolfspine Citadel. Do you have any idea how

furious I am?”

No concern in his voice. Only self–righteous indignation. Like I was his possession. Like I wasn’t allowed to make my own decisions.

I held the phone steady. My face stayed blank.

“Our mate bond is severed. Where I go and what I do is none of your business.”

“Impossible! I never agreed to this!”

Rhett still wasn’t taking it seriously. He probably thought I was just throwing another tantrum.

“It’s about Vivian, isn’t it? Fine. I won’t see her anymore. Just come back. Stop this nonsense…”

Before he could finish, someone slung an arm over his shoulder. A voice cut in.

“Who are you calling? Isn’t tonight about celebrating Vivian driving off that rogue wolf?”
