That single sentence drove straight into the most fragile, wounded part of me.

Remembering those same fights, played out again and again, my wolf whimpered in pain.

A violent, uncontrollable ache seized my chest. It felt like every drop of blood in my veins was boiling.

The bond-breaking contract had begun its work.

I felt it clearly. The mate bond that had once tethered us together thinned to a fragile thread, then slowly faded into nothing.

The next day, after the bond was fully severed, my body finally steadied.

My phone rang. It was Rhett.

I stared at his name flashing on the screen for a long moment before I answered.

His voice came through bright and laughing, like nothing had ever happened.

“Aurora. How’s your day going? I’m outside the Pack Council Hall. Came to take you home.”

“You still busy with stuff? I can wait.”

I walked to the window, phone pressed to my ear.

There he was. That familiar figure standing in the courtyard below.

In the past, I would’ve raced down the stairs to meet him.

Now, I just felt tired.

“Don’t bother. I have border affairs to handle tonight. Go pick up Vivian instead.”

His laughter cut off sharp. His voice dropped, hard and low.

“What’s that supposed to mean? I came all the way here for you. Are you trying to piss me off?”

“I don’t mean anything.”

“You already agreed to sever the mate bond. Rhett, don’t contact me again.”

He let out a furious, incredulous laugh. “Playing hard to get? Fine. Don’t come crying to me later.”

I hung up and deleted his contact entirely.

Not long after, his Beta messaged me.

[Luna, please forgive the Alpha. He’s taking this seriously now. If you don’t make up with him soon, he’ll actually break the mate bond!]

I didn’t reply. Just deleted the message.

They still hadn’t realized. The mate bond was already gone.

This time, I was truly leaving.

The next day, I went to say my final goodbyes to the Pack Council Elders.

I was just about to walk out of the great hall when I saw Rhett stride in, his arm draped around Vivian’s shoulders.

The heavy wooden doors stood in their way. Rhett reached out and pushed them open for her. The gesture was effortless and considerate.

Vivian ducked her head with a soft smile and murmured, “Thank you.”

The pack members nearby immediately started teasing.

“That’s our Alpha. Always looking out for us. You two look more like mates than anyone!”

Rhett didn’t correct them. He just exchanged a glance with Vivian.

Then he turned his head and locked eyes directly with me.

He flinched like a man caught doing something shameful. He took a half-step sideways, putting distance between himself and Vivian.

My face stayed blank. I swept my gaze over the group and turned to leave.

“Aurora!”

Rhett rushed after me. His voice was forcibly casual, but it carried that familiar arrogance. Like he was granting me a favor.

“I’m just here to brief the subordinates on pack related issues. Don’t overthink it.”

“It’s been a while. You still mad? Fine. I’ll come back to the pack house tonight and make it up to you properly. Deal?”

“Leave the door unlocked for me.”

When I didn’t react, he leaned in closer and lowered his voice.

“That’s enough now. I apologized. There are people watching. Have some respect for my dignity as Alpha.”

I lifted my eyes to his face.

It was written all over him. Impatience, irritation, and embarrassment. But not a shred of genuine remorse.

“I told you already. Our mate bond is severed.”

Rhett’s expression twisted violently. His voice spiked in volume.

In his mind, I had humiliated him. Right in front of his subordinates. Right in front of Vivian.

“…Fine. Have it your way.” He spat the words like venom. “You say the bond’s broken? I’ll claim Vivian as my mate right now!”
