“Face it. Luna’s used to being spoiled by you. Suddenly some delicate first love shows up and steals your attention. Of course she’s thrown off.”

“Vivian’s got the looks and the body. It’s no shock Luna feels threatened.”

Vivian snorted and draped an arm over Rhett’s shoulder. “We’re just good friends now. If we were meant to be mates, we would’ve bonded ages ago. She wouldn’t have even had a chance.”

“But Rhett, if I’m really causing trouble for you, just say the word. I’ll disappear. I won’t get in your way.”

“The hell are you talking about?” Rhett’s brow furrowed. “Friends are friends, mates are mates. She doesn’t get to dictate who I spend my time with.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll set her straight when I get home. If she dares get angry about it, I won’t agree to stay mated to her.”

“A she-wolf who left her own pack to just follow me here? Please, you think I can’t handle her?”

I’d heard enough. I didn’t want to hear another word.

I told the guard to make sure the moonstone got to him, then turned and left the border.

Back at the pack house, I began formal discussions with the Pack Council about severing my mate bond with Rhett.

I proposed signing the severance contract alone. I would bear the full pain of breaking the mate bond myself. Rhett could be informed afterward.

I called home. I wanted to tell them I planned to end my bond with Rhett.

The phone rang for a long time before anyone picked up.

The background noise was chaotic. Voices nearly drowned each other out.

When I said I was bond-breaking my mate bond, my mother just rushed through the words, “Handle it yourself. I’m busy. We’ll talk later.”

She hung up before I could respond.

Of course. It was always like this.

Ever since I was little, my parents always seemed too busy patrolling territory and managing pack related issues.

Even when I got hurt at the training grounds, I couldn’t get them to call the instructors and excuse me. The other pups whispered behind my back and called me “the lone wolf.”

Slowly, I got used to being alone. After all, even the people closest to me often forgot I existed.

Until I met Rhett.

He was like a beam of light cutting through my gray, empty world.

I remembered one time I lost control during a shift, no friends around to help. He helped me gather my shredded clothes and silently draped his oversized jacket over my shoulders.

That jacket looked ridiculous on me, hanging past my fingertips. But that quiet, unspoken kindness, I never forgot it.

Back then, I truly believed we could love each other and stay together forever. I thought it would be beautiful.

Then Vivian came back.

Everything changed.

They were each other’s first loves. The bond between them ran deep. A single glance, and they understood each other completely.

I could never fit into that.

Every date we planned, she was there.

Even the birthday trip I’d arranged for just the two of us, his mind kept drifting back to Vivian.

I spent months gathering moonstones, hoping to further strengthen my power. He took one look at them and said,

“Vivian needs the help from moonstones too. The next batch you collect, give them to her.”

I hurled the stones at his chest. “I’m your fated mate. Don’t you think you’re a little too concerned about your first love?”

Rhett’s temper flared right back at me. “We’re just friends. As Alpha of this pack, what’s wrong with looking after a weaker wolf?”

“What’s wrong?”

“Why does everything we do circle back to her? You remember what she likes to eat. You know her exact clothing size. Rhett, who exactly is your fated mate here?”

I thought if I laid out every hurt, he would understand how I felt. I thought he would change.

Instead, he exploded. He jabbed a finger at me and roared.

“A wolf like you, no friends and no one ever there for you, you don’t know the first thing about friendship! No wonder you’re always alone!”
