She Dressed Me Like Bait, Not Knowing the Shark Was My Brother Chapter 06

Emily’s face turned purple with anger, but she forced herself to explain. “Ms. Lane, we worked on this all night…”

“And this is the result of an all-nighter?” Sophie cut her off, taking a sip of her coffee and frowning. “The plan is garbage and the coffee is cold. Is this your idea of hospitality?”

The coffee had been hot when she brewed it, but Sophie had kept them waiting for two hours. She

didn’t dare say that, though. That would be insulting the golden goose.

“And I asked for a five-year market forecast, why are you showing me last year’s data? Are you feeling nostalgic?”

For a solid hour, Sophie tore everything apart. The plan, the coffee, the data, even Emily’s outfit. Every single thing Emily had touched was savaged.

Emily’s face grew paler. Cold sweat was forming on her forehead.

Nicole had done most of this work before. Emily just signed her name and took the credit. ‘She didn’t

know the details of any of it.

Finally, Emily stood up, her eyes red. “Ms. Lane, don’t you think you’re being a little unreasonable? By your standards, nobody in this industry could finish this in the time you’re demanding.”

“Nobody can?” Sophie threw the folder on the table and laughed. “Then you’re incompetent. My people can do it. And they’d do it ten times better.”

She clapped her hands.

The conference room door opened. I walked in, dressed in simple, casual clothes.

“Nicole?” Emily and Mr. Thornton gasped at the same time, like they’d seen a ghost. The other

employees started whispering.

“What’s she doing here?”

“What’s her connection to Lane Holdings?”

“What are you doing here?” Emily snapped, venting all her frustration from the past hour. “This is

Ms. Lane from Lane Holdings. You can’t afford to piss her off.”

“Security! How did she get in here? Get her out of here!”

this is the half-finished plan I was working on. The one you took over and didn’t bother to read.”

“Ms. Lane’s data, her layout, her focus… it’s all in there. Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean nobody can. Is it really that hard to admit how pathetic you are?”

Emily opened the file with shaking hands. Her face went white.

Sophie stood up, looped her arm through mine, and looked coldly at the room. “Let me introduce myself properly. I’m not just a representative of Lane Holdings. I’m its sole heir.’

“And this is my best friend, Nicole Ryan. She’s also the real reason we ever considered working

with your tiny company in the first place. We were doing her a favor.”

Mr. Thornton’s mouth dropped open. Emily looked like she was about to collapse.

Sophie looked at Mr. Thornton, her tone final. “Since Nicole is no longer with you, Lane Holdings

has no reason to waste our time with charity cases.”

The words hit like a bolt of lightning. Mr. Thornton shot up from his chair. “Ms. Lane! Nicole,

please!”
