I floated in the air, watching Damian collapse to his knees, tears streaming down his face, murmuring low:

“You really left?”

“Annika, how could you really leave? What am I supposed to do now?”

“What am I supposed to do without you?”

No one answered him.

Everyone stood around, expressions varying between shock and unease.

No one had ever seen the proud, aloof CEO look like this.

Neither had I.

But there was no ripple of feeling left in me.

The moment I chose to leave this world, it was as if the threads of feeling had been cut clean.

Looking back at my seven years here now, from outside it, felt like a joke.

Seeing Damian again, he felt like a stranger to me.

The System told me this was emotional recalibration.

“System, why haven’t I returned to my original world?”

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating in the air, watching the entire aftermath of my departure play

out.

But I hadn’t actually left this world.

“Host, I’m currently consolidating the assets you accumulated in this world so they can transfer with you to your original world.”

“If you don’t want the transfer, you may leave now.”

“Wait. Keep going. Transfer it all.”

I answered immediately.

Only a fool turns down free money.

Damian had never been stingy with me financially over the years-going back with all of it meant I’d be set

for life.

“Understood. The transfer will take approximately three days. Host, you’re free to move around during that

time.”

Once the System’s voice faded, I watched Damian rise from the floor.

Eyes red, he ordered Preston to bring in the most famous psychic mediums in the country.

He insisted Annika had returned to her original world.

He said he was going to find a way to see me, just once more.

Everyone thought he’d lost his mind.

For three straight days, countless mediums performed rituals at the estate, and word of it spread through all

of Fairhaven.

Ashford Group’s stock cratered, teetering toward bankruptcy, and he didn’t care in the slightest.

Finally, one medium with real ability sensed my presence, though he couldn’t see me.

He said the only thing he could do was try, with everything he had, to bring me to Damian in a dream.

Damian agreed instantly, taking sleeping pills right then and there.

The scene around me shifted, and I found myself inside Damian’s dream.

He stared at me, his eyes flooding red, and lunged forward to hold me.

His arms closed around nothing.

His eyes dimmed, his voice cracking:

“Annika, I miss you so much.”

“Annika, I know you have a way to fix this. Tell the System you’ve changed your mind. Tell them you want to

stay with me. Please.”

“Please, Annika, I can’t live this without you.”

Face to face with him now, I still felt a strange disconnect.

Watching him weep, I felt nothing. No sympathy at all.

If anything, just irritation.

“Damian, is it that I didn’t stay?”

“It’s that you didn’t choose me.”
