Every Night She Sleepwalked to Him—Until He Pretended No More Chapter 06

Something shifted in Bennett’s expression. “You have a boyfriend? Since when?”

I tried to wave it off, but he clearly wasn’t buying it.

I needed a name. Something real. “His name is Graham Ellison. He’s a lawyer at my firm.”

Graham and I went to the same college; he was a year ahead of me. He’d always looked out for me. Using

his name wouldn’t cause any trouble.

Bennett was too busy to check.

Something dimmed behind Bennett’s eyes. “Him again…”

The way he said “again” made it sound like it wasn’t the first time the name had gotten under his skin.

Had he assumed something about me and Graham before this?

“Yeah.” I nodded.

Bennett seemed to accept it. He picked at his sandwich, distracted.

I kept my eyes down.

Comments appeared. [Bennett’s POV: She has a boyfriend and she’s still coming on to me? What am I, a

joke?]

[It’s Graham again. Why does this guy keep showing up?]

[Is she moving in with Graham? No. I can’t let her go.]

[How do I make her stay?]

[Baby, please stay. I’m literally begging.]

I blinked at the comments. Were those really Bennett’s thoughts?

He didn’t look like a man who cared. Not on the outside.

He already had Camille. Why would my love life matter to him?

The comments had to be wrong. Even if he didn’t want me gone, it was probably just about the cat.

I finished eating, drained the mug, and stood to bring it to the sink.

My fingers closed around the mug. Bennett’s hand landed on top of mine. His palm was warm, almost hot, pressed over my knuckles.

Heat flooded my face.

His voice was steady. “I got it.”

I yanked my hand back. “Thanks, I have to get to work.”

I practically ran out the door.

At the firm that morning, Graham had a new client coming in for a consultation. I sat in to take notes.

The client’s name hit me like ice water.

Camille. The female lead of this story.

The comments had called her stunning. I’d thought they were exaggerating. They weren’t.

She was breathtaking. Perfect figure, perfect face, and that detached composure that made her look like old money. The kind of woman you didn’t approach; she approached you.

The whole risk of meeting someone from the internet was that the spark wouldn’t survive real life. One look at Camille and Bennett wouldn’t just be relieved. He’d be thrilled.

I could already picture it. The moment they met, Camille wouldn’t even have to say a word. Bennett would be asking me to leave.

Comments appeared. [Maren isn’t even in the same league as Camille.]

[Look at her shrinking in front of the FMC. Love that for us.]

[I’m still mad about the side character touching the MMC’s hand at breakfast.]

[And she was gonna let him wash her mug?? The audacity.]

[The FMC should find a different firm. Don’t give this girl your money.]

[Our FMC is too nice for her own good. Girl, this woman is stealing your man behind your back; she’d be lucky if all you did was slap her.]

Camille turned to Graham. “Mr. Ellison, this case involves some sensitive personal matters. I’d feel more comfortable working with a female attorney. Would Miss Whitlock be available?”

Comments erupted. [No no no, don’t hire the side character. You WILL regret this.]

[If the side character takes this case, the FMC is literally handing her rival ammunition.]

[I’m losing my mind. If she takes this case, we’re dragging her.]

The client was Graham’s referral, so it was his call.

Graham didn’t hesitate. “Of course. Maren handles a lot of cases involving family law and women’s rights.

She’d be a great fit.”

Graham handed the case off to me.

After he left, Camille told me her story.

“About a month ago, I went to a private event. I was changing in the dressing room, and a man, Brent Maddox, recorded me without my knowledge.”

“He’d asked me out before. I turned him down. After that, he started using the video as leverage. He told me if I didn’t agree to be with him, he’d leak it.”

“If he releases it, it’s not just my reputation.” She paused. “I’ve been seeing someone online. We’re about to

meet in person.”

“I’m afraid the video could ruin everything before it even starts.”
