My mom blinked.

“New York?”

Tristan frowned, confused by her reaction.

“I sent her a ticket. She’s still upset? That’s fine-I’ll wait.”

Briar said softly, “Maybe Kira doesn’t want to see us. I’ll wait downstairs.””

Tristan glanced at her.

“No. She’ll come out when she’s done.”

My mom’s expression cooled.

She looked at him and asked, “Tristan, didn’t Kira tell you?”

He paused. “Tell me what?”

She held the door and said clearly, “She’s going to University of Wyoming.”

“She left two days ago.”

His face finally went still.

She kept going. “That’s almost 2,000 miles from New York.”

“She won’t be going with you anymore.”

Tristan forced a smile.

“You’re joking, right? Kira promised me she’d go to New York.”

He stepped forward, voice rising. “Where is she? I brought her favorite cake.”

My mother blocked him.

“I told you. She’s gone.”

His steps stopped.

She thought about the days I’d spent quiet and hurt. Her voice dropped.

“Tristan, I always thought you were a good kid.”

“If you didn’t like her, you should’ve told her.”

“How could you keep her in the dark while you had a girlfriend?”

His face shifted. “I don’t-”

She cut him off.

“You knew she liked you.”

“You kept her around, let her follow you to New York.”

“I didn’t realize how hard those schools were for her.”

“Wyoming is better for her. Less pressure, she can study what she wants.”

“You can’t keep wasting her time.”

He broke.

“I do like her. Kira’s my girlfriend. She didn’t tell you?”

My mother’s eyes went cold. She pointed at Briar.

“You’re dating my daughter? Then what is she?”

Briar turned pale and stepped back.

Her voice rose.

“All summer, she came to you every day.”

“You cooked for her. Shared coffee. Helped her with applications.”

“Kira asked you for help with her essay and you couldn’t be bothered.”

“Now you’re telling me my daughter is your girlfriend-and she’s not?”

Tristan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

She shut the door.

“Don’t come back.”

Outside, Tristan stood frozen.

Briar tried to comfort him-but he dropped his suitcase and flagged a taxi.

She chased him.

“Tristan-where are you going?”

His voice shook. “I’m going to get Kira back.”

He got in the car and never looked back.

When I arrived in Wyoming, I was nervous…..

Everything was unfamiliar-the weather, the accent, the streets.

But on orientation day, my roommates dragged me out for sheepherder’s bread, then showed me

the open pastures.

It was nothing like New York.

It felt freer.

They were warm.

When I mentioned needing supplies, they built a whole shopping plan.

By the end of the day, my arms were full of bags.

For the first time, I realized I could be happy without Tristan.

Walking back to campus, a group of girls whispered.

“That guy’s so good-looking.”

“Is he waiting for someone?”

I looked up. My face went cold.

Tristan stood at the gate, still in the same clothes from that day-disheveled, exhausted.

I turned to leave.

He ran after me, eyes red-rimmed, and blocked my path.

“Kira. You can’t just leave me like this.”
