On the way to the hotel, Grant couldn’t focus.

He tugged at his collar, annoyed, trying to push down the strange tightness in his chest.

But Harper’s faint smile outside the restaurant kept flashing through his mind.

There was no concern, no jealousy, not even the slightest ripple.

Being completely ignored unsettled him more than her crying ever had.

Maddie didn’t notice at all.

She leaned against him and wrapped both hands around his arm.

Her voice turned soft and sweet.

“Grant, I heard you have an off-campus apartment. Why have you never taken me there?”

Grant frowned and pulled his arm away without mercy.

His voice was cold. “You’re crossing a line.”

Maddie’s eyes reddened instantly.

Tears gathered at the edges. “I’m sorry. I just like you so much. Harper’s been there. I’m your girlfriend now, so why can’t I go?”

Grant tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

A strange feeling rose inside him.

“What did Harper tell you?”

“She said you were basically family.” Maddie smiled and lowered her eyes.

It hid the jealousy in them.

“She talks about Adrian all the time in the dorm. She just doesn’t know when she’ll be brave enough to

confess.”

Something buzzed in Grant’s head.

The panic he had ignored suddenly grew huge.

Almost without thinking, he slammed on the brakes and pulled over.

“Go back on your own I’m leaving.”

But Maddie clutched his sleeve and softened her voice.

“Don’t go, Grant. I feel diszy. Stay with me, please.”

In the end, Grant started the car again.

When they reached the hotel, he went straight into the bathroom without saying a word.

Then he locked the door behind him.

Water rushed inside.

The phone he had left outside’suddenly vibrated.

Harper’s name glowed on the screen.

The caller ID stabbed Maddie with poison, hiding the jealousy in them.

She quickly declined the call.

Then she tried Harper’s birthday and unlocked his phone.

She deleted the latest call record.

After that, she put the phone back like nothing had happened.

Grant walked out in a towel, water still dripping from his hair, with that cold, untouchable presence around

him.

Maddie had barely leaned close when he pried her hands off.

“You should rest.” He turned his back and changed into a shirt. “We haven’t been dating long. It’s too soon

for sex.”

Maddie bit her lip.

She didn’t dare push him.

So she obediently curled back into the blankets.

Grant couldn’t sleep at all.

He lay in bed, restless, and pulled out his phone.

His message to Harper failed to send.

He called her.

A cold automated voice told him the phone was off.

Panic seized him in a way he had never felt before.

He sat up at once.

“I’m leaving. I can’t reach/Harper. I’m worried something happened.”

Maddie grabbed the corner of his shirt.

Her voice trembled.

“Grant, the school chat posted something. Harper… she’s with Adrian.”

Grant snatched the phone from her hand.

On the screen was a photo.

Adrian, who had always looked cold and untouchable, was carrying Harper out of the hospital.

He looked down at the woman in his arms, and the lines of his profile were gentle.

Harper had her arms wrapped around Adrian’s neck.

Her cheek rested against his chest.

The phone slipped from Grant’s numb hand and hit the carpet with a dull thud.
