It finally clicked.

The man the caretaker had described-the one who came every week, rain or shine-

was Pierce.

I felt nothing but confusion.

I couldn’t understand why he’d done it.

We’d broken up. We were supposed to be strangers.

But he’d taken care of my parents’ grave while I was overseas.

So I decided to talk to him-one last time.

One conversation. Finally. But too late.

The silence stretched.

He spoke first.

“I’m sorry.”

“That night-Saskia gave me a drink.”

“I don’t remember what happened after. I wasn’t myself.”

“It doesn’t matter. I don’t care anymore.”

My voice was calmer than I expected.

A year abroad had made me steadier.

His throat moved. “Why don’t you care? How can you not care?”

I watched him unravel.

No pity. No ache.

He was a stranger to me now.

That’s when I knew-I was truly done.

“The day you left, I checked the airport. Seven flights. Seven destinations.”
“I went to every single one. Switzerland. Tokyo. New Zealand. France.”

“I spent six months searching.”

His eyes dropped.

Quietly-more to himself than to me-

“I knew you’d come here eventually.”

“So I kept coming. This was the only thread left that connected me to you.”

“I wasn’t asking for anything. Just one more chance to see you. To say sorry.”

He’d always been the one in control.

Even the night he confessed, he held all the

power.

Ten years. I’d never seen him like this.

His voice broke when he spoke again.

“Ten years ago, when I said I preferred apples-that wasn’t a lie.”

“Being with you always made me feel-”

“Pierce.” I cut him off. “Don’t.”

Those words used to mean everything to me.

I’d replay them in my head on repeat.

But now they didn’t land.

I looked at him. Steady. Calm.

“Thank you, Pierce.”
