In fact, Bianca had never had a fever.

The night before their scheduled flight home, she had clung

to Luca and cried for hours.

She said everything would change after the wedding. She

Bianca had wrapped her arms around him from behind, her hands sliding down his chest.

The call was cut short.

That night, they crossed the line more recklessly than ever before, as if trying to burn through twenty years of ambiguity

in a few short hours.

When it was over, Luca got up and dressed.

He buttoned his shirt, put on his shoulder holster, and slid his gun back into place, as if assuming the guise of the Moretti heir could erase what had just happened.

As he picked up his luggage to leave for the airport, Bianca grabbed him.

“Luca, stay.”

He frowned.

“Don’t do this. We agreed this was just goodbye.”

Tears instantly flooded Bianca’s eyes. She wrapped her arms

around his waist from behind.

“I don’t want you to marry Elena. I never did. Why does she

get your ring, your name, and a seat at the family table just by showing up? I’ve been by your side for more than twenty

years.”

Luca pried her hands off him.

“Bianca, your protection from the family won’t change. But

the person I love is Elena. Last night was a mistake. We’re

adults. Don’t make this more complicated.”
