Pity From My Rich Sister? Oops, Her New Family Came Begging Chapter 07

In a private executive lounge, Ambrose poured me a cup of small-batch Kona coffee himself.

“Dr. Calder, what happened today was inexcusable. The Kincaid family owes you an apology”

He set down the carafe.

“Rhodes will not be overseeing our neural-interface program.”

“If he can’t recognize the person standing in front of him or understand what’s at stake, he has no business carrying this company into the future. I’ll build a separate team that reports directly to

you. You name the terms.”

I lifted the cup and took a sip.

The coffee was excellent.

Ambrose Kincaid was a shrewd man.

Rhodes was only one of several possible heirs.

But right now, I was the only person who could salvage the project his company had already poured

hundreds of millions into.

An hour later, we had agreed on the basic framework.

I would contribute the technology in exchange for a twenty-percent equity stake in the project subsidiary, along with a separate licensing fee.

Both legal teams still needed to review the contract, but the major terms were settled.

Ambrose drove me personally to the Aureline Hotel, the most luxurious property in Port Cresswell.

He even stepped out and opened my door.

“Get some rest, Dr. Calder. I’ll have a driver pick you up tomorrow and show you how much Port Cresswell has changed.”

I thanked him and walked into the lobby.

My penthouse suite was on the forty-second floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the

coastline.

After a shower, I wrapped myself in a robe, settled onto the sofa by the windows, and poured a glass of Cabernet.

My phone kept buzzing.

The family chat was buried under unread messages, most of them long voice notes from my

mother.

Her tone was unrecognizable.

“Carys, where are you? It’s late, and you shouldn’t be alone in a hotel. Come home. I cleared out

your room for you.”

“I know I’ve said things I shouldn’t have. I was angry. Don’t hold it against me. A mother always

loves her child.”

“Do you remember when you had that terrible fever as a little girl? I carried you all the way to the clinic. You’ve always mattered to me.”

“Carys, we’re still family.”

I almost laughed.

I didn’t reply.

My father had written next.

[Carys, I know we haven’t always treated you fairly. But Elodie did well in school, and we had

limited resources. We had to invest in the child who seemed to have the best future.]

[Now that you’ve done so well, I couldn’t be prouder. Come home when you have time. I’ll make

those maple-glazed ribs you love.]

I scrolled past it.

Elodie loved maple-glazed ribs.

I never had.

Merrick had flooded the chat with messages, his excitement impossible to miss.

[Carys, my phone’s been blowing up all afternoon. Everyone at work is sharing those articles about

you, and my boss actually came over to ask if Dr. Calder was really my sister.]

[Where are you staying? I’ll pick you up tomorrow. Dinner’s on me.]

A moment later, another message came through.

[I know I’ve been hard on you. I said a lot of things I shouldn’t have. But we’re family, Carys. We can

put that behind us.]

Keaton’s message was more careful than I had ever heard him.

[Carys, I didn’t understand what was happening today, and I said things I shouldn’t have. I’m

sorry.]

[You were always the smartest one in school. Clearly, you proved it.]

He followed it with a thumbs-up GIF.

[If you ever need anything, call me.]

Another message appeared seconds later.

[Listen to me. You’re probably the one I’ll be asking for favors now.]

[Are you free tomorrow? Let me buy you dinner and apologize properly.]

I found that almost funny.

Back in high school, when he wanted to impress Elodie, he had laughed in my face.

“How can you be this clueless, Carys? Your sister got all the brains in the family.”
