My Family Heard My Murderous Thoughts, So the Fake Heiress Called 911 Chapter 02

Catherine came up herself to call me for dinner.

She knocked three times and asked cautiously, “D-Dinner’s ready. Are you hungry? You can come downstairs now.”

“Okay. Coming.” I opened the door and followed her downstairs.

Everyone was already seated. Gregory sat at the head of the table, Nolan to his left, and Hailey beside Catherine’s usual seat.

The moment she saw me, Hailey immediately stood up, smiling brightly as she patted the chair beside her. “Sloane! Sit here! I saved you a spot!”

Catherine’s step faltered.

Gregory’s hand, still holding his fork, went still.

I pretended not to notice and took the seat.

Hailey started serving me some fish, still smiling. “Sloane, try this. Pan-seared sea bass. You probably never got anything this good at the group home, right?”

I raised an eyebrow and took a bite.

[That was a dig. Classic condescension from someone talking down to me.]

[Doesn’t matter. Dead people don’t need to care about things like that.]

Catherine’s fork clattered onto the table. She bent down to pick it up and stayed down there for a long moment.

Hailey kept going, her eyes turning red almost instantly as she looked at me with a hurt expression. “Sloane, why aren’t you saying anything? You don’t like the fish? Or… is it the food I served you?”

“I’m just not very good at talking,” I replied slowly.

[Those tears came fast. She’d make a decent actress. Provoking me like this, is she really not afraid of getting killed?]

[Strangling could cause incontinence. Cleanup would be a pain. A knife would be cleaner.]

Gregory’s soup spoon dropped into his bowl with a sharp clink. Broth splattered across the tablecloth.

Hailey kept up the act, her voice turning tearful. “Mom, Dad… does Sloane not like me? Did I do something wrong…?”

Catherine straightened up, her face pale.

She walked over, took Hailey by the arm, and pulled her firmly out of the chair.

“Hailey. Come sit over here with me.”

Hailey froze.

Catherine pulled her to the other end of the table, putting three people between us, then sat down between Hailey and me.

Hailey opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, then stopped and pretended to focus on her soup.

About two minutes later, she “accidentally” knocked over her soup bowl.

The soup spilled across the table, heading straight toward me.

“Sloane, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to!” Hailey’s voice was loud and panicked.

“It’s fine. I don’t mind,” I said casually.

[On purpose.]

“Enough.”

Nolan stood up. He looked at Hailey, his voice cool. “Go to your room.”

Hailey froze.

This was the first time Nolan had ever spoken to her so harshly in front of the family.

She opened her mouth. “Nolan, I…”

“I said, go to your room.” Nolan spoke slowly and clearly.

This time, Hailey really looked ready to cry. She threw down her napkin, turned, and ran out.
